SPECSAVERS, nothing to do with Windows 7

The following has nothing to do with computers, but may be of interest to anyone in need of an eye test in the future.

I have always been satisfied with the tests received at Specsavers, however I strongly dislike their sales offers. I needed a new prescription, I use reactolite lightweight lenses, varifocal with scratch resistance. They quoted me give or take a few pence, £219 for new frames plus lenses. I said that I wanted new lenses in a pair of perfectly good old frames, and was quoted £247, an extra £28 for the privilege of using my old frames, and saving Specsavers the cost of the new frames. Naturally I protested at this ridiculous offer. The manageress told me that they were offering a discount if buying new frames. This is of course an absolutely stupid argument. She fully appreciated my argument and had a word with the branch director. He made me an offer of £182.75 for new lenses in my old frames. A shop a hundred yards away offered me new lenses in my old frames for £115. This is the same shop that I purchased from the last time Specsavers tried their swindling act.

The moral is to do what I did, and have Specsavers eye test, and buy the glasses from an independent supplier. Before anyone points out the seemingly obvious, the independent shop does not carry out eye tests, or I would have gone there for the test too.

I just shelled out $299.40 for some eye glasses for my oldest child. Thats with insurance!!! It's all a rip off over here and across the pond as it sounds. On a fixed income, that was not in the budget but my kids come first.

I paid $295 for mine, and that's with the insurance company paying $100 along with my payment. They really were $429, but the insurance reduced the price a little. But that's still a lot of cash up front for me. I'm on a fixed income, too. And to top it off, the optician actually expects you to come in once a year for new ones. I make them go for two years before replacement.

Great advice! I always recommend ordering frames and lenses elsewhere once you've paid for an exam with an optometrist. You'll save TONS of money this way!

That's what I used to do years ago, but the insurance company that I'm with now, you have to use the opticians on the approved list. My exam is free, and they pay $100 towards the price of your glasses/contacts. That's what my deal is, I'm still saving money. Eye exams run around $70 at the minimum in this area. I pay $0.

Where I'm at I get my eye exam with the same optition every 2 years and after he fills out the perscription I can go to any place I want for the glasses and frames. I do try for the buy one get one free deal and have the hubbie get his perscription at the same time as me and we shop together.

That's a great deal, too, draceena. Really when you have two family members that need glasses, that's the way to go. But it's only me in this home that wears them. In this area, there are many places that offers deals as low as $59. But once you go in there and start adding up the options you need, the price rapidly goes upward. $59 dollars doesn't include bifocals, tints that adjust with light, scratch resistant lenses and prescriptions that over a certain strength.
