I recently discovered I could order SP1 on a DVD from Microsoft. Has anyone else used one of these? Any problems of any sort?
Any downside?
I think it's just SP1 and all prior updates, is that correct?

It is basically, an update, possibly plus a few extras added, to all previous updates.
But why order it.? It will cost you postage (You pay) It is an unrestricted media, which is free to download from many sources. Here is one reliably example:

When doing a full recovery, I just thought it might be quicker/easier to pop a DVD into the computer to bring it up to date at least through SP1 anyway, all at once before going online?

You can do a once only download and burn it to a DVD, or save it to a safe place on your HD?

I could've sworn the last time I installed Windows 7 it came with SP1 built in. Don't the ISOs MS has available for download include it?

This has been true ever since Windows 7 SP1 was released. I downloaded a copy and did a tweak to unlock all edition on the disk. This was easier to accomplish than slipstreaming for me. I have a disk that will install all editions of Windows 7 SP1 64-bit (Thanks to Nibs for the instructions) and another disk for 32-bit.

What gets me is if every disk has all files for every edition, why must the edition being activated be specifically installed. If every key is specific to its edition, shouldn't this be enough to toggle editions without specifically installing the appropriate edition?

I think I'm dreaming abit. lol
It wouldn't be hard to fix the install so that the 30 day trial is Windows Stater Edition. If you want any features you must activate with a specific key for those features. Activation would then be equivalent to the anytime upgrade. All PC's could be shipped with the Starter Edition and the user could select which edition of Windows they wanted at the time of purchase(wouldn't need to be anything more than a key card) and enter the key themselves.

That may well be if you buy just the OS. I bought my computer before SP1 came out.
I know that new HP computers do not come with pre-installed SP1, I recently emailed them and asked, they said no. I don't know about the other companies.

I'm surprised HP doesn't do that now, they pre-installed service packs on new Vista computers, but not W7.
I have no idea why.
