SOUND problem resolved (on Windows 7)

Phew ...
Champagne all around!

Thanks very much everyone for trying to assist.
I have un-installed the Realtek Hi Definition Sound driver (64bit) using the
Gigabyte motherboard disc that came 'in the box'.
Re-booted.
W7 then infromed me that it had re-installed the driver, but I installed it
from the dic just the same.
It installed without mentioning the driver was already there, so maybe W7
wasn't quite accurate (?)

Then I heard a 'ping', wow, that's the first sound I've heard in a week.

If you see an old lady smiling very broadly, that will be me :)

Happy New Year!
