Have any "sneaky toolbars or add-ons" been installed lately ?

You can try disabling add-ons in the browser.

But eventually, you'll need to find a cleaning recipe.

An AV scanner may hint at what's been added to your browser.

Mozilla Firefox, Adblock Plus, NoScript, ... , MVPS HOSTS file and
SpyBot - Search & Destroy block a lot unwanted sites/pop-ups.
