Sony Netbook Shuts Down

A couple times lately, when the battery is at or near full charge, the
netbook just shuts down. When I turn it back on, there is language about
how it was shut down due to low battery.

I've customized my power options to make it go dim at 2 minutes, dark at 5,
and sleep at 15. I've also read about letting it sit for 10 minutes and, if
the battery loses 1% per minute, it needs to be replaced. I just did that
test for 20 minutes, and it only lost 4%.

Is there any other setting I can check before heading down to the Sony
store? I've only had it for 5 weeks.

All input is appreciated. Thanks!

There is a procedure to calibrate the battery monitoring software, but:

1. I don't know the details, except that it entails charging the
battery to full, then letting it run down without AC power, so check
your Help.

2. But it seems to me that your computer is sick, probably hardware,
possibly just the battery (it most likely has a chip on board that
reports its status to the computer). There are posters here who know
more than I do, so you could wait for a more definitive reply - but
don't wait too long to go to the Sony store...

Notebook batteries seem to also be the bane of my existance!
There is a reset the battery sensor process that seems to be unique to
particular makes and models.

If the battery is several years old, there is a large chance that it is
the culprit. But, due to cost, just replacing it without further testing
is not really the best way to go.

The next time my HP laptop goes into such carrying on, I'm thinking
about drilling two small holes in the battery case, so that I can get
voltmeter leads to the contacts with the battery in use.

Unlike some, I play with electric powered RC models, and have a
computerized charger that will safely charge most laptop Li, Ni, NiFe,
or Lead Acid batteries. This can allow me to bypass the charge monitor
chip & circuitry in many batteries. The last time I had to use it was
on one of the Netbooks.

Since this is a new netbook, I took it back to the Sony store. Their tech
guy noticed a long list of critical errors in Event Viewer associated with
Apple's Bonjour program. I did install iTunes when I bought the netbook,
but only for music organization. There is no Apple device used with the
netbook.

I've since uninstalled Bonjour and we'll see if that solves the problem...
