We must remember that there are solar flares buffeting the ionosphere at this time. These cause havoc with satellites, communications, radio and TV transmissions, etc.

Just be glad there isn't a CME or Coronal Mass Ejection! Those can literally cook thing very quickly. In 1859 there was a huge CME that hit the United States and it caused the telegraph wires and the wooden poles supporting them to catch on fire.
