I see your point, but I like a sig. The authorship of a message is
important enough that I prefer to see it close to the text. And after a
while I get to know the sigs of regular contributors and I can recognise
them using only peripheral vision.

I guess a lot depends on the window layout, which obviously varies
greatly. I don't have a "From column", though there is a "From" line
near the top of the message window.
