shortcut on desktop

Jeff

I have a new Toshiba Windows 7 64 bit laptop with a synaptic touchpad
that has an annoying defect.

In previous laptops I owned, dragging with the left touchpad button gave
me the option to "copy" the item to were I am dragging while dragging
with the right touchpad button gave me the additional option to create a
shortcut.

However, on this new latop, dragging with the right touchpad button
pressed (to create a desktop shortcut) is almost impossible!

So I would like to add a rt (or left) button context menu to
"create shortcut on desktop".

Is that possible? How?

Thanks.

USB mouse?

USB mouse?
Mouse would be great but I take this laptop to all sorts of places and
often work lying down with it proped up on my lap. Because I am rarely
at a table using a mouse is not practical for me. So I am forced to use
the touchpad much of the time.

That's what the Gideon's Bible in the nightstand is for...make-shift
mousepad.

I use a USB-connected Logitech trackball with my laptop. I often have it beside me
on the sofa if I'm watching TV and using the lapdog at the same time! :^)

Is this a hardware defect that is covered under warranty?

Unless I misunderstand you, it sounds abnormal to me.

Oh. I thought it was for swatting the fuzzy rodent kind of mouse.

LOL

But aren't iPADs and touchscreens really the future in portable computers?

It sounded very abnormal to me too. I even undated the driver in case it
was the problem with no difference.
I unfortunately already installed a whole slew of my programs on it (my
impulsiveness) and would hate to return it. But it is so annoying that I
may do so and restore (all but the mouse driver) from a backup image to
a replacement laptop ......

For PCs as "entertainment centres," yes: and that is where the market
points, away from PCs as business machines. Remember, PCs (except
for Apples) were initially marketed as business machines: it was the
software makers who induced all those office clerks and bankers to
spend time at work playing Minesweeper, avatar sex games and so on.

Do you not get the standard right click menu in Windows Explorer?

There's been an item there since at least XP to "Send To", which opens a
list of possible destinations, which on all my systems includes "Desktop
(Create Shortcut)", then you left click and hold to drag the shortcut to
wherever you want it.

The preference you want may be in the driver settings. In the synaptics
driver on this Samsung Laptop, there are a number of settings buried in
the Device Settings page of the Touchpad properties dialogue box,
including one described as "Context Menu, Special Drag" for the
secondary (Right hand) button. Or you could swap the buttons left/right,
which is also a setting in the driver.

You say that "dragging with the right touchpad button pressed is
almost impossible", but you don't say what the actual problem is.

Thanks - I keep forgetting that trackballs exist.

They are ideal for when one hates the trackpad, but can't always rely on
a reasonable place to use a mouse.

I don't blame you, but a bad computer is not fun to live with.

And like Char Jackson, I also wondered what the problem actually is.

It will not drag at all when the right touchpad is pressed.
I went back to the Best Buy store and tested the model they had on show.
It did the same thing. Fortunately the Toshiba rep was present and he
could not get drag to work with the right button clicked. (All the other
laptop models on show could). He tried all the settings and could find
no solution. Finally we decided it was the way that type of new
"multi-touch" touchpad worked.

Mine is going back because it is almost impossible to use this way.
Shame because it was very nice otherwise. Model is P855-S5200.

I do get the right mouse context menu when I click the right button.
What I do not get is that it will just not drag when the right button is
depressed (like to create a shortcut). Left button dragging (which lets
you copy the item) works fine but dragging with the right button gives
you the additional option not just to copy but to create a shortcut and
one cannot drag with the right button on this laptop making it very hard
to create any shortcuts.

I went back to the Best Buy store and tested the same model they had on

"Context Menu, Special Drag" for the secondary (Right hand) button
is exactly the setting I would need, but I cannot find any such setting
in my Synaptics touchpad settings. Maybe that is what is turned off.
Could you tell me where in the settings hierarchy you find it in yours?
