Sharing a printer on another computer

S

Sid9

This had worked previously....

The printer is a USB printer and works properly on it's own XP computer.

The printer appears in "network" on my Windows 7 machine identified correctly by model number with the "shared" icon

In "Add printer" I selected "Local Printer", I choose the proper printer and get the following message:
"Windows cannot connect to the printer. No printers were found"

I then went to "Network" on the W-7 machine. The printer appears as connected to the XP computer and shared. I right click and select "Connect"
I get "Windows cannot connect to the printer" and "Operation failed with error 0x0000000a"

This had been working and may have failed after SP1 was installed...but I'm not sure of that.

There is NO new driver from HP for this printer.

Any help will be appreciated.

You may need to install the x86 XP drivers for the shared printer because the Windows 7 drivers are not compatible with XP. The following link may be of help ............

I've used this method in the past with great success. No drivers necessary
on the Win7 machine:

Thank you for your response.
This procedure took me through all the steps necessary to solve this
problem.

Stalled print jobs in the queue were a problem
Wrong workgroup name in one computer
Password protected sharing needed to be turned off on both computers.

I change WLM to default to plain text...I hadn't noticed.

Looked fine on my screen, sorry

Same with MesNews...

There might be a setting in WLM to fix that. If not, another nail in
its coffin, AFAIAC.

G

Gene E. Bloch

I read and send in WLM (but not Eleven), saw only the text version.
Perhaps a difference in settings, then...

But:

I haven't set up Usenet in my copy of WLM. Maybe I should, so I can
investigate questions such as this, since I keep WLM around so I can
try to see for myself what people are posting about.

Actually I had set it up, but the user interface is (to me) so bizarre
that I didn't realize it. There were no newsgroups near what I thought
was the newsgroup folder in the left pane, so I thought there were no
newsgroups. After clicking on the "folder", I found them at the top of
the pane, whereas the (apparent) folder was at the bottom.

Then I couldn't find the thread, because WLM apparently sorts threads
not by the date of the first post, but by the date of the last post.
And the date/time displayed is the latter, so I didn't look in the
right place until I saw what was happening :)

I wasn't slowed down too much by the time display in 12-hour mode,
except that I spent a bit of time looking in vain to find a way to
switch it to 24-hr mode.

When I finally opened Sid9's post, I saw a readable post in which the
HTML was nicely rendered (shudder).

My version is Live Mail 2011 (Build 15.4.3508.1109).

And ya know what? I ain't going to use it (other than to look at what
someone is describing, as above...).

WLM sees it as HTML Text and it's readable. Not all NNTP Servers will even
download HTML Messages, that's why it's such bad for to use it.

'form' not for.

'form' not for.
So that's why you 'groan' that I keep a copy of the program for
reference? I don't get it...

I have two newsreaders that just display it as text. That's good & bad.

Good: I am not bothered by it.

Bad: I might reply to something that is HTML without realizing it.

'form' not for.
What does "Not all NNTP Servers will even download HTML Messages"
mean? NNTP servers don't download anything so that sentence is
confusing. I tried changing 'server' to 'client' but it still didn't
work.

You're a good man to go to that trouble. :) I usually just limit my
WLM advice to the suggestion to upgrade to anything else.

You're not serious, are you? The expression was accurate. The NNTP Server I
am using will block messages with images, messages cross-posted to more than
3 newsgroups, and, yes, they block those very large HTML messages. By
"block", the server will not download them to my client.
