I have 2 test w7 machines, one is 32 bit and one is 64 bit. The 64 bit
machine has sp1 listed as an important update to install, but the 32 bit
machine does not, and it is not in the hidden updates either. So I went
to computer > properties to see if it was installed already, and I don't
think so. (It says : Windows Edition Windows 7 professional Copyright
2009...)

Does this mean sp1 is not showing up in updates for this 32 bit machine
and how do I get it to show up? Or should I just download it standalone
and install it that way?

Thanks.

Why don't you just go to the Windows download site and just download SP1
for Windows 7 and be done with it?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I just want to make sure there isn't some
reason it is not showing up as an update for my 32 bit machine such as
an incompatibilty detected on the machine by windows update or
something. Are there any known issues like that?

No, nothing that I know about. MS has the Win 7 SP1 readiness tool you
can download and run to see if your machine has any issues if you are
concerned.

Cool, I'll try that.

Hi, Capitan.

The two quickest ways to check for whether SP1 is installed are:

1. <Win>+<Break> (Hold the Windows key while you press the Pause/Break
key.)

2. Winver.exe

Either of these will SAY "Service Pack 1" if it has been installed;
otherwise, no mention of the SP.

I think you have to have some earlier updates installed before Windows
Update offers SP1. I installed Windows 7 x64 a few weeks ago, and SP 1
didn't show up in the updates until I had installed all the earlier
updates.

It didn't appear as an update on my 32-bit machine until three days
after the official release.

Microsoft does "stage" some of the updates to prevent server overload.

It's a valid question, though. SP1 doesn't show up in important
updates for my Win 7 Home Premium either. I have updates set to
automatic, but system properties still shows Windows as copyright
2009, so evidently SP1 hasn't been installed.

What's stopping you from doing it yourself? The SP doesn't need to come
in a Windows Update, it can be downloaded separately and installed by
you. You can use the Win 7 SP1 readiness tool to check your machine for
issues. Maybe some Windows update solution is stopping it from showing,
which may need to be backed out.

Also Start>Control Panel>System.

Just download the standalone file. If there are other patches that need
to be applied, and it doesn't apply them itself, then it'll tell you
what you need to pre-install.

Lack of time, basically. I know the odds are that it will be trouble
free, but the horror stories are hard to forget. And I have so much
else going on that I haven't felt inclined to make time to download
and run a pre-SP1 tool just to help me run SP1. I'll get around to
it eventually.
