Saving to Desktop

Dave

I've downloaded Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool three times and
saved it to the desktop but can't see it. When I redownload it I get a
message saying file exists and do I want to replace it. If I do a search for
the file name it isn't found.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

If I download and save the file to any other folder I can't see it with
Windows Explorer. If I use the download function again, when I point to the
directory I previously saved the file in, it's there and I can open it from
there. If I try to move, copy or create a shortcut to it on the desktop it
won't work. When I look at the properties of the file it is not a system,
hidden or read-only file so I should be able to maneuver it however.
I don't know of any compatibility issues with Win7, none are mentioned on
the dl page and it runs fine.

Try saving it to an external drive instead.
Or make a new folder on the Desktop and save it in that.

Try re-arranging the icons on your desktop.
Right click on an empty space on the Desktop, and then select Arrange =>
By Name.

Thanks for the tip, made a new folder on the desktop, saved it there and now
I can find it. I must be overlooking something, there's another file I had a
couple days ago and now I can't find it either. I can get it again so it's
just an aggravation rather than a serious problem.
Thanks again,
Dave

Tried re-arranging and no help. Tried the right click and don't get a
selection Arrange.
Grenou solved my problem with his suggestion to make a new folder and save
there, I can find it now.
Thanks for the tip,

I looked in the 32 directory and didn't see it. I re-read the lit on dl site
and it says the 64 bit version is only compatible with Windows XP, Vista and
2003 so I guess that's the problem. I ran two versions and no problems, but
it didn't report any problems either from the scan results so that may be a
problem in itself.
Anyway, thanks for the tip,
Dave

Yep, happened to me too <g> lol I seem to go through a heckuvalot of
problems:)

Right click on desktop/vew/autoalign or autoarrange. It mucks up the
arrangement of your icons, unless you like them like that, but all the icons
will be there and you can always unclick those options to get where you were
to start with:)

OK, found the option under the view tab and like you said it squashed all
icons to one side of screen. Easy enough to go back but still didn't find
the missing one.
Interesting enough, while playing with this feature, I renamed the file and
was able to copy, create shortcut and move it to desktop. Once there it even
added a unique icon for it.
I guess something about the name caused the problem.
Thanks for the tip,
Dave

Found it, thanks. Finally found a solution to problem, I renamed the file
and was then able to maneuver it to desktop. Something about the filename I
guess.

Thanks for sharing your solution too:) May I ask what was the extension of
the file you were having problems with?

It's sorta a bug. Mark Russinovich tracked it down and the file
actually gets downloaded to a virtual desktop folder somewhere in the
user app folders. He documented it in his blog over a year ago. (yes,
it's in Vista too.)

But to cut to the bottom line, if you can't find the file on the
desktop, open an explorer window and navigate to /users/<your
login>/desktop. You will find it there.

It may still be on your desktop, hidden behind a widget or another icon.
Click on an empty spot on your desktop, then keep hitting the "M" key to
cycle through all icons starting with the letter "M" and see if it finds it
tucked away beneath another icon or widget...

The extension is an exe. The file is a downloadable from MS called Malicious
Software Removal Tool and it's a simple tool to do what it says. It's a
supplement, not a replacement for a good antivirus program.
The link is: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx
There is info on the program there with a link for the dl.
The file name for 32 bit systems is: windows-kb890830-v3.4.exe
For 64 bit systems is: windows-kb890830-x64-v3.4.exe
NOTE: The 32 bit version won't run on a 64 bit and vice-versa. The 64 bit
file link is on the bottom of the page under: What Others Are Downloading.
Don't know why they don't have both files listed in the same place but MS
will be MS. ;-p
I guess Win7 doesn't like something about the filename, Vista and XP (I
think I used to run under XP) didn't have a problem with it.

Redownloaded the file and you are correct, it's in my desktop rather than
the public. Also part of the bug is it doesn't locate doing a search either,
only going to the exact folder finds it. I used to run this in Vista and
think I ran in XP as well and don't remember ever having this problem
though.
Thanks,
Dave
