Red is missing

Howdy: A friend has an HP computer running windows 7 Home Premium
64-bit. It seems that it will not display the color red. Nothing but
green and yellow. This makes for a very pale desktop and picture
viewing. I have been into the graphics control panel and moved the
sliders around with out any effect. I returned them all to default,
Nothing, nada. Could some one please comment and tell me if this is a
video card.driver issue, motherboard problem or a monitor problem.
Everything else works just fine. I'm sorry for the lack of any more
info. If needed I can contact him and get it. Thanks.

In my experience that usually means loose cable, bad cable, bad
monitor, bad video card in (roughly) that order.

Borrow another monitor to test.

In order of likelihood and ease of doing it:-

Try gently wiggling the monitor connectors (Both ends of the cable) and
make sure they're not loose. Try changing the monitor lead. Try another
monitor. Try reseating the video card, if you're not using the onboard
graphics.

Try the tests on this page:-

http://tft.vanity.dk/

(The tests run using Flash in your browser, or you can download the
flash executable and run it outside your browser.

Finally, check to see that your friend is using the latest video driver,
if nothing else cures the problem.

If none of this cures it, and the monitor works well on another
computer, then it's the video card. If the monitor doesn't work on
another computer, it's the monitor. The check system can be anything
including a laptop, it doesn't even have to support the monitor's
resolution.

Both DVI and VGA have color specific signals for R, G, B.
A fault in one of those signals (short or open), could affect the color.

Video cards have custom color controls. Including perhaps, sliders
for each color. A mis-adjustment there might do it.

Or, you can check the monitor OSD (on-screen display). Maybe
the monitor went nuts, and the settings in the OSD cranked
over to an extreme value. Check the OSD for clues.

Some brands of equipment, have a high failure rate in that
regard. Apple made some (CRT) monitors years ago, with prevalent
failure modes. Always run the model numbers of the equipment
through Google, to see if your failure mode is common or not.

Another possibility is a bent pin. This can happen if the
connector is forced into place. Disconnect the monitor connection,
and have a look. A bent pin can often be straightened, but do so
gently or it may break (which could mean that the cable has to be
replaced).

Hi, Seabat.

You told us about the computer and Windows, but not about his monitor: LCD?
CRT? Make and model might be of interest. Nowadays, of course, we assume
it is an LCD, but...

Last time this happened to me was at least 10 years ago and the red gun on
my CRT monitor had died. So I replaced it with a 15" LCD from Korea. That
little KDS monitor cost me over $400 in 2002! But it's still working
perfectly for the relative I handed it down to when I got this big <g> 17"
LCD from Wal*Mart in 2005 for just over $200.

Sure they are :) I got a 17" for $100. We can have a contest to see
who bought the crappiest monitor. Mine had one bad pixel. VGA only.
From Staples.

The worst (CRT) monitor I had was really a pain!
It failed under warranty, was shipped back, repaired, and returned
with a hole through the shipping container and a broken glass noise
inside. Back it went. The replacement worked long enough to go out of
warranty, then started failing. I ended up having to re-solder a bunch
of joints on a circuit board attached to the CRT socket.
As I remember, the brand was Tatung, and it barely worked at 1024x758.
