Reboot instead of shutdown

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. It has started to reboot instead of shutting down
whenever I try to shut the system off. It just started a week or two ago. No
hardware changes to the system. No software installs except WIndows updates. Any
idea what the problem could be? Thanks.

Someone has to ask the obvious question and I guess it's my turn, so
here goes. Does the button actually say Shut Down or does it say
Restart? As you may know, that same button can do about 5 different
things, such as shutdown, restart, logoff, sleep, etc.

Which antimalware apps have you scanned with lately?

Right-click on the Taskbar. Select "Properties".

Click on the "Start menu" tab. Does it say "Restart"on the "Power
button actions" dropdown? If so, change it to "Shut down".

Thanks for both of those replies. To answer both, it says Shut Down. I'm
familiar with the other options. And usually, after one failed attempt to shut
down, after rhe computer has been on all day, once it's booted up again, a
second attempt to shut it down is successful.

Have a look in the Windows logs, especially the System log (Control
Panel/ Admin Tools/ Event Viewer/ Windows Logs - System).
Look for errors and warnings. They might give us some info that we can
go on.

Could be bios setting changed to restart from shut down, as my bios
allows choice.

Sounds like something nasty is causing a bluescreen followed by the
reboot when it's forced to close. Perhaps check in the Advanced System
Settings and turn off "automatically restart".

A failing power supply is a fair possibility.

If no one else's advice helps, I would just pull the plug (if it's a laptop, remove
the bettery). Then replace battery/plug and power up in 'safe mode' for debugging.
