I just received an email from the ReadIris company suggesting that I
upgrade the simple free version of their OCR software that I received
with my HP scanner for W7. I've never seen an ad that was so good at
hiding the price. Perhaps I read too fast but I still don't know the cost.

It is hidden for a good reason! $129.00

With some respect to Iris, I find their special upgrade offer of the
free program is $79. That's a bit much seeing that Micro Center was
selling the Vista version for $49. I find it expensive for a program
that has a rather non-intuitive interface (in my opinion) if it's like
the free version. I have to admit that it does do a good job of OCR.

I just went to their website and hunted down the regular retail price. I
don't have a HP scanner.

It costs money. Does it matter how much if you're only looking for free
solutions? For OCR freeware, some choices are:

SimpleOCR
Irfanview (with the Kadmos OCR plug-in)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CuneiForm_(software)
Google Docs:
- Look for "Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs".
- Online service, no software to install.
http://www.freeocr.net/
- List of free OCR products.

Folks in the alt.comp.freeware group might have more free OCR solutions.
