ProgramData Folder - Norton

Windows 7, 64 bit
In my C: drive, folder ProgramData, there is a "Norton" folder and a
"NortonInstaller" folder. I have no Norton stuff installed that I am aware
of.
The machine is a Compaq Presario. Wondering if these Norton folders might
be something Compaq loaded. I'll probably delete them and see if I sink.

Check your "Programs and Features" in Control Panel first and uninstall from
there.

But it is hurting anything or taking up gobs of space?

They're not in the Programs and Features.

Probably live content from a web app or some other application that has some
components licensed. That's a folder for "transient" content.

Unless you are critically low on space, why screw with it?

Probably preloaded by Compaq. Personally I'd not let anything "Norton"
within a million miles of any computers I own and it annoys the crap out of
me that companies like Compaq do this. They don't use Norton but are willing
to impose the crap on us. Either go to www.symantec.com or just google
"norton removal tool" (without the quotes) and run that to make sure you get
rid of every last trace.

Actually, Norton's last effort is light years ahead of anything they did in
the past. I have hated Norton products for years because of the system slow
downs and annoying dialog boxes, but I have lately installed Norton Security
Suite (free from Comcast), and it updates and scans in the background
without any issues. I can't even tell it is running, except for the tray
icon, and the fact that the log files show that it is updating and scanning
daily.
