Printer problem

I have a HP Color LaserJet 2605dn that I can't seem to get set up properly.
I'm not finding any setup checkboxes that offer a color-print choice.
I've tried going through Control Panel & selecting the Adjust Print Options
and Customize your printer -- no improvement.

Windows update says I need an updated driver, but keeps crapping out on the
install; then it refers me to the vendor's site.

I've tried the driver from HP but still not getting any color output.
I did manage to get it to duplex -- but can't get the Preferences to *stick*
with duplex.

I may be trying the wrong driver, their d/l page is not terribly helpful
about this, I guess you're supposed to *know* what you need.

No answer from the HP online forum.

I had no problem with this under XP so I don't understand why W7 is causing
me such problems.

I do have the (dated 2006) CD that came with the printer but don't want to
risk running "setup" if I don't know what I'm doing.

Install new printer in Control Panel just says that a USB printer is
installed automatically -- which it was, only *it doesn't work*,
at least not with all its features.

So I thought I'd ask here in case anyone happens to have any ideas.
Thanks.

I have the same printer and using the universal print driver for
win 7 from the HP site. One day the printer would only print in
blank and white. I eventually found a setting under printer
properties/device properties. At the bottom is device type that
has choices for auto, color, and B/W. Mine was set to auto and
after setting it to color, all was well.

There are two win 7 drivers, PCL6 and Postscript. Versions of each
driver for win 7 32 and win 7 64 are on the HP web site.
It's certainly possible that the features/options are different between
the PCL6 and the Postscript drivers.

You didn't mention which version of Win7 you are using.

They have specific links for 15 different Operating Systems, here:

Thanks for the info.
But I'm not seeing *anything* that offers me a chance to choose color.
Could you be a little more specific about what box & how you got there?

I think I've clicked through just about every box/tab I can find.
The only references I see anywhere to color are something about ICM,
nothing with any auto/BW/color to choose from.

In the Printers/HP... box, under "customize" I show it's using
HP Universal Printing PCL 6
Is that the driver you're using or do I need a different one?
(I *think* I got the default setting to economode but we'll see if that
really sticks.)

Thanks for your help. At least I know it should be possible to get this
straightened out!

Sorry, it's W7-64bit.
& I got the PCL6x64 driver. It looked like the closest match.
I'm not using PS.

My setup: Same printer as yours and the 64 bit Win 7 HP Universal
print driver for PCL6 dated sometime in Feb.
From devices and printers, right click the printer and chose
printer properties from near the center of the list (not the
bottom item - properties). A window opens and chose the device
settings tab. That is where I found "device type" at the bottom
of the list.

Thank you for the detailed instructions -- they have that bit well hidden!
I think it's done the trick -- I'll find out in a day or two if it "stuck" &
I'm back to where I used to be (w/ default duplex/color).

Now I have to find how to give it various quik-option sets -- I'm used to
using a few for specific tasks, like duplex/grayscale, non-duplex, etc. w/o
having to tick boxes in multiple places to do it. (maybe I've forgotten, but
I don't remember it all being this obscure in XP....)
