Printer installation

M

Marv

I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 7 with SP1. I have
an old HP5l laser printer that I am attempting to install for both
systems. On the desktop I plug in the USB connector and the system
recognizes the printer and installs the driver. In Printer & Devise it
shown as a HP-5L printer and I can print just fine.

On the laptop. when I plug into an USB port the only thing hat appears
to happens that it show up in Devices and printers as a IEE-1284
Controller - no installation of driver installed. Can print from it.

Why would this be different between two systems with exact operating
systems? I would appreciate any thoughts.

Clearly the systems are not the same. Simply go to the manufactures website,
search, download and install the correct driver. I'd do this on both
machines in order to acquire the latest drivers recommended by the
manufacture of the hardware you wish to use without (I presume) unexpected
errors and problems.

This printer seems to be well supported with driver software for many
operating systems. Go here and download the latest drivers for each
machine:

Be careful if your reader wraps the URL, you may have to copy/paste it into
your browser address bar. And keep in mind that it is usually good practice
to install the latest drivers first, or at least check to see if your OS is
supported.

HP does not make a driver for anything beyond XP for this printer. I
did not mention that I am using Windows 7 64(bit) on both systems. What
I can't understand is why it installs with the correct printer name
HP-5L on one system and loads drivers and works while on the other the
it appears in Devices and Printers as IEE-1284 and does not give any
indication that it has installed any divers.

See my earlier post for a link to HP drivers page for that printer. As an
aside, HP says you don't need to download drivers for Win7, but gives a
detailed explanation how to install the printer in Win7. See here:

Find the .inf file that the printer uses in the Windows/inf directory
on your desktop and copy it over to the same place on your laptop.
Make sure you also copy over any associated driver files (should be
mentioned in the .inf file) to the appropriate places.

I thank you for your assistance. I tried the site you indicated. I get
to the part where is asked to enter a printer name (HP 5L - it is not
listed when Windows compiles a list)and get the message that the driver
for printer HP DeskJet 5150 is being installed then get the error
0x00000002. I looked this error and there are many posts relating to it
but I could not find any that solved my situation.

I am particularly puzzled with the display in Devices and Printer that
shows the device as IEE-1284 when the computer is connected to an USB
port (the printer interface is actually a parallel one but I have a
adapter to change to USB. This has worked just fine on several systems
in the past and works on the desktop.

Thanks for the reply. I tried this site and it appeared that it might
be of help. I attempted to install the Active x from HP and then when I
tried to go from there I get the Windows has blocked the software due
to unknown publisher.. Couldn't get past that. I am the only user and
I assumed that gave me administrative rights but I am obviously missing
something.

I think you'll find that they do. Who do you think supplies M$ with the
drivers for there OS discs if it's not the manufactures of the devices?
Anyway look here
http://goo.gl/pT3in
a complete list for the HP-5L
And of course your using Windows 7, your in a Windows 7 newsgroup. But you
declined to mention your using 64bit. No matter the link is still valid.
