Physically in RAM or in the swap file, but as far as the OS and programs
are concerned it's on the clipboard.

Where is the image located when Print Screen is activated?

As other have already said that the image in in the RAM/Clipboard and I
guess the real question you wanted to get answered is how do you
retrieve this. Right? If so, you retrieve this by simply pasting it to
your document (CTRL + V) - word/excel/WordPerfect/etc. or even any
graphics editing program.

In windows 7 there is also a Snipping Tool and it is better than simply
using the PrtScr button.

Hope this helps.

..In other words it is saved to the Clipboard, not to a (jpg) file.

It should be pasted to a paint program to open it.
Or it can be pasted into a mail program such as Outlook, or an
application like MS-Word. It's not always necessary to create a
specific image-file type.
