My dad's PC (Win7) used to run PowerDVD automatically when a video DVD was
inserted, but recently it has stopped doing so. He's not aware of having
made any changes to the config that coincide with PowerDVD stopping running.
The PC recognises the presence of the DVD, as seen in the Computer section
of Windows Explorer, and the contents of the disc are visible (the VIDEO_TS
folder containing the VOB and IFO files), but Power DVD does not start.
If PowerDVD is started manually from the Start Menu, it runs perfectly, even
to the extent of remembering how far through the disc it was and resuming
playing from that point.
I've looked in Control Panel | AutoPlay: there is a tick beside "Use
AutoPlay for all media and devices" and for DVD Movie, the setting is "Play
DVD Video using Power DVD".
I've even tried setting the action for DVD Movie to other values like "Open
folder in Windows Explorer" and "Ask me", and the behaviour changes
accordingly, to open either a Windows Explorer window showing the contents
of the DVD or to open a dialog that asks whether I want to play using Power
DVD, when I insert the disc.
So AutoPlay seems to be behaving itself and Power DVD is quite happy to play
discs if it is started manually: it's only when AutoPlay tries to start it
automatically that it fails to do so.
Any suggestions? I'd reinstall Power DVD but he doesn't remember being given
an installation disc for it: it was pre-installed and may be part of a
Dell-specific system restore disc rather that being separately installable.
