Any one with any experience about them please?

Dave
A bit of a strange place to ask, however: Yes. I've been using them for years
without problem. They are of course owned by BT, but I've been using them and
Metronet (who they took over) since 2004.

Yes, I thought that.

(I assume the asker is in UK.) Yes, it seems odd that PlusNet are owned
by BT, since (a) they undercut them considerably on price (b) they have
an entirely UK (mostly Sheffield, I think) helpdesk, which BT do not.

I've been using them for a few years (for broadband and 'phone
provision), and on the whole am pleased with them. (And since JKE
didn't, I'll be cheeky and say if you go with them please mention
jpgilliver as I get a reward if you do!)

Was with them for a few years and found the service reliable with good
speeds. Helpdesk is based in UK but you pay for calls. For a simple no
frills service they are good value for money.

However, I left them a couple of months ago to join BT in one of their all
inclusive packages and have not regretted it. Their new version 3 BT Hub is
a great piece of kit (worth nearly £100) and speeds are about the same or a
little faster. Helpdesk is based in India but on the one occasion I had to
speak to them I was answered promptly by a well spoken and intelligent
person who I had no difficulty in understanding or in trying to convey my
query. It was dealt with quickly. Help lines are free.

My recommendation would be BT closely followed by Plusnet. Others will no
doubt disagree. But unless you have sack loads of cash to spare on a premium
service that's what I would suggest.

Good luck with your choice.

The @btopenworld.com email address was a bit of a giveaway... :^)
AFAIK their helpdesk is totally UK-based now.

Aargh! I forgot about that! :^)
Mind you it's only 25p per referral off your monthly bill nowadays.

Assuming we're talking BT, is that including telephone-related matters?

Assuming we're talking PlusNet, there's no actual extra charge for the
calls above that of the 'phone call - and I _think_ even those are free
if you get 'phone service from them too; they have an 01- number anyway
(though keep quiet about it these days), so it's free evenings and
weekends on most packages. Also, unless your broadband service has gone
down anyway, their "raise a ticket" system is quite good, and you can
monitor the progress.

Speeds are to a great extent not going to vary much no matter who you're

Indian helpdesks get a bad press - but I have certainly had ones that
aren't good (sometimes on line quality alone). Last time I had to deal
with one (talktalk), they were courteous and clear, but it took two or
three people before I got what I wanted (someone who knew that talktalk
customers have a different main password to their mail-retrieval
password and could tell me what it was for the person whose new PC I was
setting up [yes I've written them down for her now!]).

For budget, in UK, talktalk and plusnet usually vie for cheapest: I
think talktalk are very marginally cheaper on monthly charges, and
plusnet if only considered over the initial period (12 or 18 months or
whatever it is). Personally I'd say PlusNet's customer service is far
better than talktalk's (I've had to deal with that for others), but when
all is working OK, you get the same whoever you're with, like gas and
electricity. (Well, I've seen talktalk's speed be almost unusably slow
at peak times, but I'm not sure if that's them or just the network where
my talktalk friends live.)
