please recommend USENET newsreader program

B

bilsch

I have been using WinXP for years and have been using Outlook Express
for mail and news groups. Now I'm using Win7 woithut Outlook Express.
I'm now using Gmail web mail for email but I haven't yet looked for a
newsreader program. Can anyone here recommend a USENET newsreader for
use with Win7? Anyone have a link to a free hassle-free download of
such a program?

TIA Bill S.

Thunderbird I use on my Windows 7 machine for Gmail, Earthlink mail,
Usenet, and using the NNTP Bridge program so that I can access MS Web
forms using a NG reader with Thunderbird. It's free.

Oh man! I have been using Thunderbird since v1.5 and it is just terrible
for newsgroups. Light duty stuff it is okay, but if you want to get
serious, it is just awful. It is nothing as good as Outlook Express for
newsgroups.

SeaMonkey, if you want the entire suite.

I have had no problems with Thunderbird, and I don't live on Usenet either.

Try XanaNews out. It is available at:
http://xananews.techtips.com.br/

XanaNews has many more bells and whistles than Thunderbird in terms of a
newsreader...

It's nice to be able to switch to each medium with ease with one
program. You can't beat it for diversity. :)

You'll get different opinions from different people. In my view you
should ignore *all* our opinions, try several for yourself, and choose
which one works best for *you*.

That said, I'll tell you that, having tried many of them, my favorite
is Forte Agent. Don't automatically choose what I choose, but I do
recommend that you at least give it a try.

And another point, that I neglected to mention in my post moments ago.
Many people don't realize that if you use Gmail, you don't have to use
their webmail. You can do Gmail using almost *any* e-mail program, and
I strongly recommend that you do. Web mail, to me, is the slowest,
clumsiest, featureleast, *worst* possible way to do e-mail,

Again, try several e-mail programs and choose the one that works best
for you.

I've been using Forte Agent for years.

Dunno if it's a comment on my being in a rut or Agent being a
good app, but I never thought of using anything else.

One thing I've grown to like: ASCII and HTML mode. I read most
of my stuff as plain old ASCII text, but all I have to do is hit
the "/" key and it switches to an HTML-rendered presentation.

I use the paid version, but there is a freebie. It's been so
long that I can't even remember why I switched from freebie to
paid.... but it works for me.

I've tried more than I can remember and have always come back to
Agent latest version. Not free agent but that is how I got started
with Forte.

I have tried and re-tried many newsreaders over many years.

MesNews has been my favourite now for the past five years, before that
it was Gravity. Both are free.

I'm a fan of Xnews, you can get it here:

http://xnews.newsguy.com

Get the latest version, then replace it with the "test" version.

Why? Because:

All the help you'll ever need is in the group news.software.readers

Xnews is probably the most configurable of all readers but will work
well "out of the box", it includes wonderful killfile and scoring
abilities which are essential if you venture into troll-infested
newsgroups.
