PIM for Windows 7

J

Jeff

I'm retired and am looking for a calendar based PIM to keep track of
appointments that I could use on my Windows 7 laptop. I own MS Outlook
but it is overkill especially as I do not use it for email or anything
else. Google calendar would work but it is in the cloud and I would like
something that I could keep on my laptop and off the cloud.

Any suggestions?

Thank you. Jeff

Here's some good places to start your search:

http://download.cnet.com/windows/calendar-and-time-management-software/

http://www.efficientcalendar.com/
They offer a portable version that runs off a USB stick, handy, since
you wouldn't be limited to your own machine.

And a bunch more that I found by searching on "calendar software free".

Have fun!

efficientcalendar seems to do just what I need. Thanks for the suggestion.
Now I need to find a utility to convert my ics files to comma sep file
to import into efficientcalendar because that is all it will import.

Thanks again.

Check out Mozilla Thunderbird with the Lightning calendar add-on.

Good suggestion. I just tried it and works for me. Also imports ics
files which is great.

Does it have a portable version for flash drive?
Don't forget with the "Provider for Google Calendar" extension you can
link Lightning to your Google Calendar (easy enough to set an account up
if you haven't got one). You can then access it from anywhere you happen
to be, and grant access to others if you so wish.

I use that indirect set-up to sync Thunderbird/Lightning on my Linux
Laptop, via the Google calendar, with my Microsoft Office calendar (via
another little sync program in Outlook). I've got the same set-up on a
USB stick too.

I've been using EPIM for years. http://www.essentialpim.com/ It's
perfect for all my needs. The database, or databases if your wife
wants to use it, can be encrypted and saved anywhere. There's even a
portable edition and a totally free edition with only a few
limitations. The calendar is very good, and so is the Password module.

Yes, see (in Office section):

There are many other portable apps listed. Don't overdo it... ;-)
I love portable apps! I have PortableApps Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 and have
successfully installed an earlier version of Lightning. No problemo.

I also use the essentialpim. The portable version.
I downloaded EssentialCalendar and it is indeed great.
Did not try EssentialPIM, wonder if it will conflict if I install it to
see what the difference is between the two.

Tried it. I think I prefer just the calendar. No need for the email and
contact list that EPIM adds. Use ThunderBird for that.
(keep my notes in Notecase Pro which is another excellent program).

I installed EssentialPIM on my computer, but don't use it mainly because it
also installed itself as my default e-mail application, which I don't want it
to be, and I'm not sure how to undo that.

I just installed it and kept Essential Calendar. TB remains my default
email app.

Your preferred e-mail client should have an option somewhere to make it
the default e-mail client.

I meant to say I just *uninstalled* it and kept Essential Calendar
