Photo Smart HP 7510 and photo cropping

Normally, I would seek out a forum for something like this, but the HP
printer forum seems to have bungled my registration. No approval reply
after 2 days.

I have an HP 7510 printer, and it has a scanner. Unfortunately, when I
try to scan say a 4x6" photo, it gives me jpg the size of the entire
scan window. My wife uses the same printer, and sometimes scan photos.
She's using Linux, and her scanned images are 4x6". Anyone have a clue
why I can't get them?

The scanner part scans what ever it sees, size, color, etc.
The viewer part lets you view the data.
Check the viewer settings.

The scanner scans whatever area it is set to scan. The default is the
whole platen a (8-1/2 x 11"). The viewer will display the file, which is
what OP is seeing. His wife's Linux machine is using a Linux scanning
program, which apparently defaults to auto-select the area to be scanned
(by finding the edges of the 4x6 print).

According to HP 1750 specs, the scanning resolution is 1200 DPI
(optical), which is what it should be for photographs. . Because the
specs indicate "enhanced resolution up to 19,200 DPI", I would think
that the scanner-driver has a lot of settings, which OP should explore.
I suspect could do a lot more than merely manually select the scanning
area.

W.eWatson: If a driver/program disk come with the machine, make sure
you've installed the scanning software, and set aside an hour or two to
explore what all you can do with it. Beware: scanning is addictive. How
do I know? Well, now that you mention it.... ;-)

If you've mislaid the disk, google on "HP 7150 driver" to find HP's
driver download for this product.

Have a good day.

Page 3 of the user manual.

"Scan to a computer or memory card

To scan photographs... touch *Scan* from the Home screen

Select the destination by touching either *Memory Card* or *Computer* "

So that scan is initiated from the LCD touch screen on the front
of the HP 7510.

Later it says:

"If you want to adjust scan size, output type, scan resolution,
file type, and other settings, start scan from the printer software"

From the other manual, it adds:

"Open the Printer Software to select Scanner Actions,
and then select Manage Scan to Computer."

In other words, if the scan is initiated from the computer end, you
get complete control. If the scan is initiated from the LCD touch
panel on the HP 7510, then it scans the whole glass surface.

There is a picture of the HP software here. You can try
"Scan a Document or Photo" to scan from the computer end,
and have more choices ("Advanced Settings" ???). Apparently,
"Scan to Computer", pushing the scan from the 7510 to the computer,
can be turned on and off as well.

That's all I can determine, looking at the available info. To make
matters worse, there is one other HP help page, that manages to
mix "push" and "pull" scanning in the same flow of text, leaving
me thoroughly confused.

I don't know this particular scanner, but often, the driver (really a
piece of software, with GUI, in its own right) does a full-glass scan at
low resolution (hence fast), after which you can pull the dotted edges.
This applies even to the TWAIN driver (try doing a scan from inside
anything that can interact with TWAIN sources, such as IrfanView, to
trigger it).

My ancient scanner software does that, but I couldn't suggest it here
without seeing a picture in the interface. And all I could find, is
the top level dialog for the 7510. Nothing lower level to use
for confirmation.

I'll take a look for the CD. Maybe there's even a manual for it.

Me too.

I looked at the installed HP printer s/w I have installed, and it's
almost mind boggling where to start. I went down to our local Staples
story yesterday, and asked their tech guy about it. Of course, the 7150
is no longer available, but he did show me how to do it on a current
model. I explored the choices from the printer panel, but found nothing
like what he showed me. I'll give it another try.
