"Out of Memory" error.

Win7 SP1

When transcoding a DVD I got the error "out of
memory". I use Nero 8.

I cold booted the computer and this fixed it.

Is there a way to "free up" this memory without a
boot operation. I typically cold boot only once
per week.

You may receive an "Out of Memory" error message because of the desktop
heap limitation in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I've transcoded 4 blu-ray movies at the same time and never got such a
message. Time for a new computer.

Sorry, hit the send before including the picture of the memory tab.

Resource Monitor doesn't tell you everything, but it's a start.

If you look for "Sysinternals", "Mark Russinovich", "PoolMon",
or even articles on WinDBG, there may be ways to probe further into
memory usage. But it's not something I know well enough, to
write a book on. Ideally, you want the Nero program to give you
a better error message, to save wasted efforts with other tools
(to tell what kind of memory it ran out of). There are multiple
memory resources in the OS, and some are a lot smaller than
others. Yousuf has given you one example.

"Cold boot" means to shut down power, wait a few seconds, and then
restart. Did you do that, or did you click the start button and then
Restart? The latter should be sufficient.

The problem is that programs are often sloppily written: they get
resources from Windows and then fail to return them. "Out of
memory" doesn't necessarily mean RAM and virtual memory on disk; it
can also mean other system resources. A restart frees up everything.

That said, you should probably check virtual memory to make sure that
it is system managed. It's not easy to find: Computer » Properties »
Advanced system settings » Advanced » Performance » Settings »
Advanced » Change » Automatically manage paging file size for all
drives.

That's a good find; thanks! I've always rather vaguely said "system
resources", but this is much more specific.

Anyone know of other such resource limitations, particularly if they
can be adjusted?

Thanks, I have tried this when transcoding but for
Nero8 the CPU never goes above about 25% (i7
6core) total.

However when I transcode with the Adobe
PremierProCS4 (home movies etc) the dials all slam
up against the 100% mark, and I have to put the
CPU fan up to 'high'.

Maybe its just the number of applications on the
go at once.

I checked this and the settings were as you said
they should be,

Now the Fax is giving trouble, throwing up an
"unknown error" that goes away on reboot.

But I downloaded the Microsoft "Fixit" (Microsoft
Fix it 50496) and applied it. And I hope this
works.
