When I try to run a program with an unassigned file affiliation I used
to get an opportunity to assign a affiliation at that time. Also, if I
right clicked on to object I would get an opportunity to change it or
use it just this time.

Where did it go?

I just want to make .bas to go to Power Basic most of the time, but
miKroBasic at other times.

When I right click on an .flv file, I want an opportunity to go to
real player. Instead, the function takes me to a third-party vendor
that wants to find something to sell me...

I wonder what happened to my Recent Docs que? I found myself using
that a lot too!

When I go to the control panel function to assign a file affiliation,
if it ain't on the list, you cannot do it!

You can add an entry to the Registry. Follow the pattern of a
convenient existing entry.

That *should* work OK :)

Another solution is to add desired programs to your Sendto folder.

Isn't it available if you right-click the Start Button and select what
should appear in the drop-down list? Unfortunately I'm running an
XP-style start menu and don't have access to the original unless I want
to mess around a bit (I'm too lazy to bother).

Yep. It's one of the many improvements in Win7 over XP... ;-)

The problem with that is that Windows 7 only allows you to use one
program at a time. In Windows 2000 I could create any number of "Open,"
"Edit," or "Run" options. Fortunately, I can duplicate that versatility
with a third party add on:

I use Classic Shell to achieve that XP-style start menu. I can get the
default Windows 7 style menu if I hold the shift key while clicking the
Start button. I can also retrieve the default "Properties" page, with
the document queue option, with shift-right click.

That's an improvement?? What if you want to make something other than
the MS offering the default program, like a different text editor than
Notepad?

Hi, W8CCW.

When you right-click on that .flv file, you should see "Open with..." on the
context menu that appears. Clicking that should get you a list of suggested
programs - the one you want is probably NOT included. But there should also
be a "Choose default program..." button. Click that, and then the Browse
button on the next screen, and navigate to the program of your choice. Be
sure to check - or UNcheck - the inconspicuous box for "Always use the
selected program...".

If a right-click on the .flv file in Windows Explorer does NOT get the "Open
with..." option, or if clicking that option does not offer you a choice,
then you may need to scan your computer for malware. Something you
downloaded (maybe that "third-party vendor that wants to find something to
sell me...") might have hijacked your system. Or you may have previously
chosen to "Always use..." Power Basic to run your .bas files.

There are several shortcuts to "recent" items. Recent "docs" usually is
available only in apps that create .doc files, such as MS Word, just as
recent "xls" files would be offered only in MS Excel and similar apps. In
Win7, you don't even need to open Word or Excel. Just highlight it on the
Start menu and hover for a moment; the "Jump List" should fly out, listing
recent files that you've opened with that app. There are ways to turn off
Jump Lists and you may have (intentionally or not) done that. In your Start
menu, you should see a small black triangle pointing right; hovering should
pop up the "Recent" list for you to click on your choice. You can also
activate Jump Lists for those apps when they are open on the Taskbar;
right-click on the icon to see the list.

Also, as Jeff mentioned, you can right-click on the Start orb, choose
Properties, then Customize the Start menu to include "Recent items".

You probably already knew most of these things, but other readers may not.
The main thing to remember is that Win7 is NOT your Grandpa's WinXP, even
though they look a lot alike. ;<)

guess the time has come to rethink that decision!

So far I have resisted using an add on shell in favor of being certain
that I am giving the new system a fair chance. I may go that way
later.

I have trusted Norton Internet Security to keep the system safe from
malware. I hope it is adequate.

I will continue to adapt and work around.

Did you miss the ;-) at the end of the line?

I know which OS I prefer and it isn't between 6 and 8... (And I have a
feeling that Win8 will be even less user-friendly, if you want to do any
tinkering with how MS think you should be doing it.)

I guess it all depends on how patient you are. MS have never subscribed
to "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Trouble is, in many areas of Win7
in "fixing (and improving)" it they broke it.

I was perfectly happy with Windows 2000, but without updates it can't
handle my new hardware.

OTOH, Crash's idea about the SendTo folder is easier and safer - and
come to think of it, that's what I usually do.

It's nice to have people here (Crash, for instance) to wake me up :)

One way to get there is to click on the Orb, type shell:sendto in the
search bar, and press enter. You'll be exploring the SendTo folder, and
you can put your shortcut there.

Along with all the other suggestions you got, here is another.

Create a "New Toolbar" on the task bar, and use an empty or new folder
for it. Now drop shortcuts to the alternate programs exe files that you
wish to use. When you want to use the alternate program, you simply left
click/drag the file to the appropriate program shortcut and that exe
will open the file.

I am beginning to feel like Win 7 included a new executive assistant
for me. Not only is she a tyrant, she continuously challenges my
authority.

I will win, I always have the last word!

I just found the task manager hot keys. I will pursue a hot key popup
list for my aging brain...
