NTFS problems

I bought a new laptop in August and everything was ok until a couple of weeks ago when at bootup it started to go into scandisc looking for a NTFS file. If caught it in time and cancelled it it boots up into windows 7 and all is well, if I don't cancel it it does a full system check and then freezes at the result page and I have to switch off and start again. Occasionally it starts the system check and cancels itself and on a couple of occasions it just won't boot up into windows at all. I have re-installed windows from the hidden partition several times and still the problem persists. I've been told it is a software issue and others have said it is my hard drive that is at fault. Any ideas anybody?

Do you have all patches installed from WindowsUpdate? What are you using for an antivirus?
