Notification Balloons in W7

Sorry, I have another W7 question. I installed a modem only for FAXing.
So, I initially let W7 install its driver and all was happy. When an
incoming call was received, Window would pop a notification balloon with
the caller ID info and a quiet bell would ring through the PCs speakers.
You could then click on the balloon to "answer as a fax". I really
didn't want the bell to ring, so I installed the software that came with
the modem. I had to install their modem driver. After all that, it
still didn't work the way I wanted it, so I removed the software and the
driver and went back to the Windows 7 driver. Now, on an incoming call,
nothing happens. Yes, I can open the Windows Fax and Scan and click on
answer and that seems to work. But apparently the above churn has
changed the registry and now I don't get the notification balloon. I
would like to get the balloon notification without the bell ringing and
then be able to click on the balloon to "answer as a FAX". I've Googled
until my head is swimming and didn't find anything. I know on my old XP
computer I was able to fix this same problem by changing the Registry.
Is there way to do this in W7? I don't like playing with registry
entries, but I have done it in the past. Thanks.

After all that mucking around, I don't know if this will still work, but
you can enable, disable, or change the fax notification sound with
normal Windows configuration settings. This is one of a number of ways
to set sounds. Open Control Panel>Sound. Select the "Sounds" tab. Scroll
down until you find the "New Fax Notification" entry. Select "(None)" at
the top of the "Sounds:" drop down menu.

Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, looking at the sound setting, it
shows that it is enabled ... that is, the sound for incoming call
notification. It is a default "old telephone" bell. And, knowing that,
I can turn it off once I get everything else sorted out. But, there is
no notification and there is no sound, when the phone line is ringing.
You can, as I mentioned, click on "Answer Now" in the Windows FAX & Scan
panel and the call will be answered as a FAX. So everything appears to
work except the notification balloon.

Remove the modem, then boot up and uninstall the software that came with it
that you use for faxing, and reboot. Once it's back up, disable Fax in
Windows services (Start . . Run . . services.msc). Shut the PC off,
reinstall the modem, the boot back up. Windows will probably find it and
want to install drivers. Go ahead and let it. Once it's done, re-enable the
Fax service and see if you get the balloon again.

Do you mean there is no sound when the 'phone is ringing, _before_ it's
been answered (manually or automatically) so you can tell it's a fax -
in other words, you don't have any other real telephones on that line?
If so, you could always connect one (there's probably another socket on
the back of the MoDem for the purpose) - after all, it's always useful
to be able to tell someone they're trying to call on a fax number, if
they do by mistake.

No, I don't think you got what I was after. When I 1st installed the
modem, W7 put in its driver. Then when any call came into the line, the
balloon on the lower right hand of the screen would pop giving the
caller ID and the statement, "click to answer as a Fax". It would also
play a wav file of a, now old fashioned, telephone bell. I want the
balloon; I don't really want the ringing sound. Dave\"Crash\"Dummy
showed a method that will get rid of the sound. My real phone will
ring. It is a cordless and it is on a UPS. It will ring after the 1st
ring is received and caller ID info is read (on the 2nd ring). I do
this as the phone has the ability, like some/most cell phones, to play
custom ring tones depending on the caller. Even without the balloon
notification, I can, in Windows Scan & Fax, click on "Answer Now" and
the Fax would be answered. But the balloon was very convenient. BTW,
this happened in my old XP computer and I was able to make a minor
registry change and the balloons returned. I will probably try
SC Tom's idea, however, I've done most of this already, with no joy. I
haven't actually physically pulled the modem card.

SC Tom ... Thanks, but I just tried that and it didn't work. I still do
not get the balloon notification of an incoming call.

Ah. The sound should be turn-offable in "Sounds" as others have
suggested, if you ever get it working again.

Well, I fixed it ... sort of. I used the System Restore point to back
up to where I was when all this stuff happened. I don't like using
that, but it appeared to work here. There were only a few minor side
effects; a few icons that I moved around, returned to their original
positions and a Thunderbird Theme, which was installed after the restore
date, disappeared. No problems though ... so far. It's funny, the
balloon notification now shows up, but there is no caller ID. But I
don't care as there is a phone right next to the monitor with caller ID.

Well, I was hoping you'd find a fix for it other than a SR. I don't have the
problem (haven't had a dial-up modem or fax in years), but was curious how
to get notifications back. I saw numerous suggestions on-line about the
notification area and enabling/disabling them, but nothing for that type of
message pop-up. Glad you got it fixed, though.

Yes, me too. So I attempted to try the driver that came with the modem
and I'm now back to no balloons again. I was trying to get back the
caller ID. I tried another system recovery and, guess what? It didn't
work. I think I am going to call the modem manufacturer's help line and
say, "fix it, please".
