No wireless connectivity

Hi all,

I'm new here, but I've been prowling the Forum for a while... I just had a technician install 7 Professional on my custom built PC... I had XP Pro before...


I am unable to see any of the wireless networks in my area, including mine.

I have two other XP PC's that connect fine, one hardwired via router, the other a laptop that connects wirelessly.

the router is a LinkSys WRT54G, the Network card in custom PC is a Zonet ZEW1642....


I'm thinking the router might be the issue, but not sure.

I have checked device manager and no problems with the adapter in there, ive tried uninstalling the card to no avail....

What could be the issue?

If you have two other PC's connecting to the router regardless of the operating system then there is nothing wrong with the router.

You should check your wireless drivers for Windows 7. One solution that was posted on a different thread was to connect directly to the router and let Windows Update download the drivers for you.

Another thing to check would be to see if you have an unidentified network conflicting with the network that should be working.

How do I go about doing that??

And I don't think the drivers would be an issue, as they tested the connection out at the store before giving my PC back to me. But I could be wrong.

I am using the same router without problems.What security are you using (Wep etc) Have all the hidden computers got the same workgroup?

I am using WEP.... and I just checked the workgroups on the two XP PC's they were on "MSHOME" The 7 PC was simply "WORKGROUP" which I changed to "MSHOME" with no success....

Now that you have corrected that (a Major reason), try and reboot all the computers and see if you have any luck.
Open the Netwrok and sharing centre in the Control Panel and run through the first two options. (Set up a new..., and Connect to a network)

Tried that this morning, didn't work.... Still seeing the little red X in the notification area.... grrr... this is frustrating.

Hey guys,

I fixed this issue. I ended up hooking it up directly to the router. It connected fine....

Just for kicks I unhooked the wired connection and tried to go wireless... and it worked this time...

My conclusion:

The wireless G signal from the router isn't strong enough to reach to my room, which is up two flights of stairs and down the hall from where the router is proportioned in the house.... It doesn't make sense that it's not picking up the router's signal, as it was picking up before with the old configuration... albeit with a different PCI Adapter (ZEW1602)

Back to the drawing board, as far as where my computer is in my room, I guess. Wish me luck and thanks for the help!!

Yes Clifford, I did.

And get this, I put my PC back in the same position it was in before, when I having the issue, and it found and connected to my home network without a problem...

Simple troubleshooting, I guess.
