No sound fromj AVI or MP3

The further I go with this sound problem the worse it gets. So I need
to ask for help.

I have XP and W7 both installed on a desktop. Separate bootable hard
drives. Been using alternately for a while now - for several other
purposes. Now I seem to have messed up audio trying to get 'video
capture' to work. It seems to work okay using XP, but not W7. I get
video, but no audio. What's even worse, now I have lost audio
completely even when I simply play a any .avi clip or even any simple
..mp3 music clip.

Where I stand is this:
1) I get boot-up and shut down audios on both XP and W7.
2) Control Panel>Sound Managements sound off with signals when I click
on choices (eg error). Both XP and W7.
3) Device Manager shows no driver problems on either XP or W7.
4) Hardware-wise, I have earphones connected to speaker out on the
desktop rear and also speaker out connected to Line in.

What on earth have I done in W7 to completely lose audio from avi and
mp3 recordings? And if I ever get that back, then I need help trying
to get video captures to work in W7.

Help?

As a first step you could try the trouble-shooter.
Control Panel(icon view)> Troubleshooting > Hardware and Sound.

Some people at rec.video or rec.video.desktop might be knowledgeable in
this area. It's probably worth a look.

I forgot to say that I did that.

1) Simplify the setup. Connect Line Out to something you can monitor,
like a headset or amplified speakers. Remove any more complicated
cabling schemes you might be using.

2) Only connect a "stimulus source" to Line In or Mic In. Try
working with a sound source connected, until the problem is
rectified.

3) The Mixer panel has controls for recording.
And, it has controls for playback.

Entries can exist in *both* of those areas.

For example here, there are Microphone and LineIn controls in
both the Playback and Record section. The Playback section
allows a microphone to be used with your speakers, like a PA.
The Record section allows controlling what you record from and
the level used. The button needs to be unmuted, to be useful.
And the level control to be adjusted above zero.

And Stereomix allows recording, what is currently coming out of
the speakers. In Windows 7, Microsoft generally doesn't like to
support that, feeling it's a way for people to make "exact copies"
of DRM protected sound or something. So if your Stereomix is missing,
that's a possible reason why.

4) On playback, you have Master and Wave, and both must be non-zero
to hear audio for at least some situations.
