I just make desktop folders titled "Audio Programs", "Text Editors", "PC
Utilities", etc and move icons to the appropriate one. Very easy, to say
nothing of cheap.

I have been using Fences for several months as a replacement for Iconoid.
It has several very nice features - double click the desktop and all icons
(except for those you mark otherwise) are hidden.
Once you have all your Fences set, you can take a snapshot and restore
that desktop whenever you want. You can save many snapshots of
different layouts and quickly restore the one you want to use.
You can add titles to each of the Fences.
The only small irritation is that when you add an icon into a Fence, you
can't
easily place it where you want in the list. Rearranging the icons reminds me
of the "15" puzzle, where you have to re-arrange the numbered tiles and put
them in order.
You can also set the transparency and several other variables, as well.
