If your desktop is awash with icons, It may just be me but sometimes I
can't see the wood for the trees, but this fence gizmo should have been
on windows, it is really good. O.K for me at least.

I've been using it for a month or two. It works well for me: I tend to have
way too many desktop icons and way too little organization :)

I have made a 'Desktop Tidy' folder and file all the desktop icons in there.
Have done this for years, it works a treat.
Anything I want quick access to is pinned to the Start Menu, with the most
used programs on the Taskbar.

Hey, I've got one of those, but on my computer it's called the Recycle Bin.

But I really have got a folder called "Odds" on my desktop into which I drop
all sorts of junk. I don't clean it out often enough, though.

I Just hide the icons. I cant see the desktop behind other programs and when
the computer is Idle I prefer to see Pictures not Icons

I just make desktop folders titled "Audio Programs", "Text Editors", "PC
Utilities", etc and move icons to the appropriate one. Very easy, to say
nothing of cheap.

A little computer literacy helps avoid the need to shell out $80 for some
nonsense utility.

There is a very big difference between clutter and trash.
You are an optimist :)

You have to admit that Jeff's comment was clever.

OK, you *don't* have to admit it...but still...

I just use my cannot-live-without MS Office 2000 Shortcut Bar (on Win-7 x64 w/MS Office 2007 and 2010 beta installed). Still works perfectly and keeps all of my program icons for all of my programs, sorted by category on 9 toolbars.

Have always hated a cluttered desktop

Hehe, I know the feeling.
So far so good, I have regular cleaning out sessions of both.

Hide 'em? I have an old little hider that I had forgotten about:

I just tried it under Windows 7 64-bit edition and it still works. Run it
once, the icons go away. Run it again, they come back.
Compiled with Dev-C++ it is 4 KB.

I have been using Fences for several months as a replacement for Iconoid.
It has several very nice features - double click the desktop and all icons
(except for those you mark otherwise) are hidden.
Once you have all your Fences set, you can take a snapshot and restore
that desktop whenever you want. You can save many snapshots of
different layouts and quickly restore the one you want to use.
You can add titles to each of the Fences.
The only small irritation is that when you add an icon into a Fence, you
can't
easily place it where you want in the list. Rearranging the icons reminds me
of the "15" puzzle, where you have to re-arrange the numbered tiles and put
them in order.
You can also set the transparency and several other variables, as well.

Gaw John. I've just started using it and it's a tasty bit of kit. Use
it with low transparency on a solid colour background and it's well
pleasant on the eyeballs. I particularly like the bit where you can
double click the desktop and all icons disappear so you can use the
desktop as a workspace. Well nifty.
Av a banana!!! let's do the lamberth walk.
Nuf sed guv.
