Need Help With Start Menu

D

Dock

Hi,

I am using Windows 7 x64 as an administrator. I only have one account
and it is an administrative account, in case that was relevant.

My problem is that no matter how many times I rearrange my folders in
the All Programs start menu, they always go back to alphabetical order.

I've had to resort to numbering my folders like this: 1Registry, 2Audio,
3Video,4Graphics, 5Accessories, etc... just to keep the main folders on
the start menu in an order that I choose.

Sorting the icons within these folders is futile also. I can rearrange
them all day and they will stay in the order I put them in for a bit,
varying time periods, but they always will ultimately put themselves
back in alphabetical order.

I have the "Sort All Programs menu by name" option in the Customize
Start Menu dialog unchecked.

Can anyone give me some tips?

Not sure how to fix your problem specifically, but You could pin your programs to the start menu and they should stay in the order you pin them.

You can increase the # to 30, the list of frequently used programs.

You could create desktop shortcuts to have them always visible.

You could try a 3rd party app such as Fences (free) to organize them in any way you want on the desktop and hide them with a double click if you like.

I adopted the philosophy of "why bother?"

Just use the search feature.

You don't "really" need to order the directories like you describe, imho.

YMMV.

Best,

Andy

I hope others will respond. Your response was useless.

The part about using the search feature to find icons on my start menu
that will not arrange themselves properly is amazingly stupid.

Why respond to the post at all? Just let people that have brains
respond.

In the short time Andy has been posting it was clear from the beginning he
had the IQ of a plant.

Well I was going to respond but am now afraid that if my answer doesn't live
up to your expectations you might berate me and hurt my feelings.

So I'll just keep my answer to myself...

Seth, don't lump yourself in the same category as Andy. I've read some of
your responses and you have nothing to fear. Andy is a bonafide moron.

I'm running Win7 64 , one account as admin. Normally I have the start menu set to
sort by name but I have just cleared that box and moved a few folders around in the
All programs menu and they seem to stick where I set them even after a few re-boots.
Can you tell when yours reset themselves, after a re-boot or when something else happens?

Why are you responding at all, if that is the case? I was genuinely
asking for some help and got trolled and told to use the search feature
to find icons that aren't arranging themselves properly.

And you fault me for responding in the manner that I did? For God's
sake, his advice was to simply don't worry about it.

This could not have been for real.

Give it time, Dave.

I haven't been able to nail down exactly what I am doing when they
change. I do stuff on the computer, open programs, browse the web, work
in my file manager, listen to songs, etc... and when I go back to the
start menu, wam, they are all back in alphabetical order.

Like you, I have rearranged them and shut down and restarted and they
would stick, so I would think I had it working correctly. But, they
always change back.

Alphabetical is quite handy and easy to find things; if you know your
alphabet.

Alphabetical is silly and boring and not efficient. I would rather, for
the sake of fluidity, group together folders such as audio with ones
such as video, etc...

Hey, thanks for the comment though, that was really helpful.

Thanks for the compliment...

But I do have to say, the answer to which Dock got his/her panties in a
bunch was actually an accurate suggestion. May not be exactly what was being
looked for, but it does work and could alleviate a users need for the start
menu.

Me, I have my most common items set for the Quick Launch menu. Those as
well as secondary items are "Pinned" to the Start Menu. Pretty much
everything else I do by the same method. Just type enough into the Instant
Search box and it runs from there.

The "why " was teasing.

I didn't read his answer as a troll. I thought it was a good suggestion.

Yes I do fault you for the manner in which you responded. It may not have
been what you were looking for but it was a working alternative. You got
snotty in response. Those are people who I mark as to not bother supplying
information for in the future.

Go ahead and mark me. You haven't helped a bit. When a question is asked
in a help group, either you answer it or don't. Giving suggestions that
were in no way asked for is silly and not productive.

I choose to have a start menu that functions correctly. If you believe
that this is not something that should be cared about, don't answer.

I was not looking to change my computer usage habits to be more like
yours.

Someone merely offered an alternative. Sometimes they work for you,
sometimes they don't. Doesn't mean you should be an ass about it. Same
advice as you give above. EIther you like the answer or you don't.
I was not looking to change my computer usage habits to be more like
yours.
Apparently you don't wish to be civil like others as well.

When I read Andy's response, I did two things:

1. I told K that the OP was going to react negatively.

2. I took a poll. Two out of two in this room agreed with Andy. We just
got used to the new way and went on from there.

For me, Andy's method became in fact much more convenient than the old
way, but K just got used to it. No better, no worse.

I haven't done any pinning yet (except in the task bar), but I am
listening to your suggestion :)
