MS Word crashing

I use Microsoft Office 2000, It's worked fine on three different systems
including my current two year old system which is running Windows 7 Professional
64 bit. But the past week or so, it started crashing every time I open a
document. Most times it will open the document and let me read it, but then when
I go to close it, it freezes up and I get the message that it's not responding
and do I want to close it or wait and see if the program recovers. Any idea what
I could check to see what the problem is? Thanks.

I use Office 2000, but, it is not compatible with Windows 8. So, I use
Libre Office (free) on Windows 8. All documents work fine. So, if you
get into a pinch, download Libre Office (BTW, their web site was down a
few minutes ago).

Close Word, search for Normal.dot and rename it (e.g. Normal.old).
- fyi: MS Word will create a new one on next Word use.
After rename, test again.

You better tell him also HOW he can access Normal.dot which is a hidden
file not normally accessible and also how he must first close MS Word as
otherwise he will NOT be able to rename an open file!

Why do people take it for granted that the person with the problem will
know all the intricacies of such an operation. This is a bit like
telling them to go to Shangrila. Where the hell is Shangrila? Tell them
that too.

MS Office 2000 is too old for me to remember its features. Does it have
the "Detect and Repair" option under the Help menu? You'll need the
install discs to repair.

What happens when you reboot into Windows' safe mode and retest?

Yet tried disabling your anti-virus software and retest?

Yes, I just checked and it has Detect and Repair under Help. May I assume this
only fixes Word and doesn't mess with Windows or the other Office 2000
applications? Thanks.

..doc files with Open Office? Thanks.

To open with open/libre office rt. click and go to open with and select
OpenOffice Writer or LibreOffice Writer as the case may be. Not quite
sure about OpenOffice Writer as I have only got Libre Office. But you'll
see it there however it is named.

To open upon normal click with LibreOffice Writer, rt click, select
properties and click Change under the General Tab on the Opens with: MS
Office line and select LibreOrrice Writer or the OpenOffice equivalent
if you have got OpenOffice installed on your system.

This method applies to any file, be it a .doc file or a .jpg file or
what. You can associate ANY 3-letter extension such as .doc to be opened
by any SUITABLE program of your choosing.

Quite simple actually. In case where a suitable installed program is NOT
indicated you'll have to navigate to the relevant folder and click to
select the right file that will open the document. But normally most
programs will make themselves available to click right in the file
properties window when you click Change to select the program to open
any file with that particular extension.--

Regarding "first close MS Word"
--> Read it again.

--> Normal.dot and Normal.dotm (unique to 07/11) show up on Win7 without enabling 'Show Hidden files' when performing a search.

The Repair works on all of Office. It checks all of them. Remember
that these components are integrated with each other so fixing one could
mean breaking the integration or leaving another component still broken.
Just because you don't use the other components (in a manner that causes
the same problem) doesn't mean they aren't also broke.

While the Detect and Repair is an entry in the Help menu for all Office
components, another way to run it is mentioned at:
