missing printer icon

Hi All,

W7, pro, 32 bit.

I was a customer's site yesterday. He has an HP Deskjet 9800
printer. It appears in all of his programs and even maps
to a local Terminal Server. He has no problem printing.

Problem: the 9800 printer does not show up in Devices and
Printers.

If I go and add the 9800 a second time, the add dialog names it
"...(copy 1)". That also does not show up. Mind you,
every other printer shows up, including a network attached
printer.

I rebooted twice in case that was the problem.

What the heck? (No, I am not blind!)

Many thanks,
-T

I posted recently about this, but concerning an HP 1020 and a Canon
iP6700D. Got lots of replies, but no solution. Where are those who claim
W7 is perfect when problems like this are posted?

I'll second that question. Where are the people who claimed Windows 7
was perfect? I follow this group closely and have never seen anyone
make such a claim.

The guys are quiet on this subject. Rather unusual.

I had to go into the registry to remove the "..(copy 1)".
This is a weird problem. It is only missing from the
Devices and Printers.

I haven't got a tech evangelist troll in a few months.
They are a waste of time. I wish they would go elsewhere.
M$ has no bugs I tell you! None what-so-ever! If you
do not realize this, your customers will fire you!
Bunch of trolls.

Nobody in their right mind would make a claim like that. On the other
hand most of the "problems" that folks post about here are self
inflicted by attempting to "make Windows work they believe an OS is
"supposed to work".

There was (by implication) earlier this week. I can't cite names, as
that attitude gets them in my killfile quicker than anything else.

Under Administrative Tools --> Print Management, perhaps the printer
is assigned to a non-standart port?

Have you tried the printer troubleshooter yet?
control panel > troubleshooter> hardware and sound: use a printer

No. Printer is working fine. Won't hurt to try. I see the
guy in two weeks, maybe.

Under "Printer goes missing" in this group, addressed to me. I made the
mistake of telling this troll I was honest with my customers about
the quality problems in W7:
Great, but your wacky attitude puts you at great risk of losing their
business if they discover the truth. I've gotten a lot of my business
from people and small companies who had gone to another service first
and were told 'that's just the way it is'. Well, that's not just the
way it is, not by a long shot. Just because you refuse to fix the
problems doesn't mean the rest of us are incapable.

...

Good words, but the rest of your story tells just the opposite. I
don't want to tell you how to run your business, but a good first step
is to be honest about what you can and can't fix. Don't lie to your
customers and tell them Windows 7 is crap. Unless you're confident
that you're their only source of information, they may just wise up
one day and realize you've been lying to them. I've picked up some of
my best customers that way.

Suggest you try the USB option.

Pete
Huh. The printer does have a USB port. LPT ports
are always more relyable. Maybe I should install
it as USB. If the icon shows up, manually switch
the port to LPT3.

Great idea. Thank you Pete!
