So I wound up getting one of those infamous ransomware viruses. Shut down my computer, can't boot, can't boot in safe mode. Found a program to get rid of said ransomware.

So I start up my computer to run this program. I get the 0xc000000e error about unable to start because required device is inaccessible. So I pop in the recovery disc, access the menu and run startup repair.

It takes forever and does nothing. So I reboot the computer to try again. Select startup repair and get the exact same error, despite the disc being in the drive. So I F10 and change the boot order to use the CD/DVD drive first. Same error, still unable to run startup repair.

The hard disk self test checks out. So if I can't even use the recovery disc, what do I do?

Okay, so I changed the boot order to the CD/DVD drive first, then hammered the F8 button. Might get this to work after all.

With another computer, download TDSSKiller and RKill from our Freeware DB onto a flash drive. Then boot your system into safe mode without networking. Run TDSSKiller and after that run RKill and after that run a full virus scan with whatever A/V you have installed. The first two will take maybe 5 minutes each but a full virus scan can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on your hard drive size and number of files.

Booting in safe mode makes sure only minimal services/programs are started. TDSSKiller is designed specifically to look for rootkits. RKill is designed to stop the stealthing programs that hide/protect/regenerate some nasty viruses. Running these first will help ensure your A/V has the absolute best chance of cleaning up infected files.
