Has anybody had trouble with files disappearing from hard drives on
Win7Pro 64bit, after the computer is shut down over night.
Hard drive has partitions C:D:E:F:
There is no trace of them the next day, not ever in recycle bin.
Not all files just odd ones intermittently.

Sometime it will not allow you to save files to the main hard drive
but will let you save to a USB portable hard drive & then copy it back
to main hard drives Ok.

Thank
Ian

Sorry, I haven't had that problem.

I do run a serious firewall and anti-virus.

I have had some game library (dll) files get mis-detected and
mis-labeled as malware and quarantined though. Usually, they get
replaced by the software when the next update comes out with a
corrected database.

It is possible that this is occurring for some unknown reason w/ your
firewall/anti-virus software?

I don't use 64-bit Win7, but never ever with any version of 32-bit
Windows.

Did you do a thorough search of every part of every disk?

I've never seen anything like that, either. It sounds like a problem
with an anti-virus program.

In the past, when I've had people tell me their files disappeared, it
was almost always one of two scenarios:
1. They forgot where they stored the files in question.
2. They forgot what they called the files in question.

Regarding the other part, where "it will not allow you to save files
to the main hard drive", I think we'd need to see the error message to
troubleshoot that. My guess is user error, but I admit to being biased
in that direction.

Yes. Unless there is some severe disk corruption, or something else is
majorly broken (in which case there are usually other major symptoms
going on,) I've never seen data files just up and disappear like that.
Even viruses and malware tend to corrupt files rather then delete them.

One pickle that I see a lot of people get into is that they somehow
save files with no extension. Since an application's Open dialog box
tends to look for it's associated extension by default, the document
isn't displayed, but it's really there, of course.

You might be onto something there.

Thanks for above but they have not been wiped by the Antivirus prg
AVG, I use Total Commander to search all drives.
I have been using computers since 1980 (commodore64, 128,Amiga, then
Win95,Win98,ME,XP), Win7 is on my Daughter Computer.
Its not something basic and all hard drives check out OK
These are jpg, avi, and doc file and all are safe once on external USB
drives. Also a lot of the file are copied on my computer with XP Pro
and CA antivirus prg with no problems.
Win7 does seem to protect some file.

Yes, I guess Char Jackson might just be onto something there!

As we say in my mother tongue, some people just can't straighten out
their one dick using both hands!

It is amazing what some people will do, like plugging the power adapter
of an external device into the graphics output socket of a laptop
already connected to the mains. And then telling me that he had
immediately pulled out the second plug when he realized funny things
were happening, thinking that that should have saved his precious
10-year old!

And when I told him he had probably fried his mobo or at least the
graphics card built into his laptop mobo his reaction was: "But I
immediately pulled out the plug!" How could something fry that fast?!

Neither would he listen to my advice to go and buy himself a new laptop.
His old one with its faulty screen to start with but which sported a
full complement of 256 KB (!) of RAM.

So he took it to PC-World to get a quote for a new mobo! Needless to say
he nearly dropped to the floor when he heard the PC-World quote for the job!

We live and learn, as they say. But obviously some people don't!
