Two problems that I faced head on with my computer have finally had
their problems resolved today. Too late for me, I had to find my own
solutions to it from scratch, but it looks like Microsoft saw enough of
these errors to respond to them. If I left the SP1 installation off till
today, I probably would've been able to do it without getting my
fingernails dirty. Oh well, everything is a learning experience, I guess.

The two patches dealing with installation failures of SP1 were:
"0xC0000009A" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1 or
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2534366
An update that prevents a "0xC0000034" error message when you try to
install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is available
