The picture was taken in Windows XP but I want similar info in
Windows7. Right-click on the task bar icon does not give me this info
like it did in XP.

Thanks.
I see a recipe here.

Control Panel : Network and Internet : (Connection Status) : Details button

Then, look around to see what other dialogs have a Details button like that.

Control Panel - Network and Sharing Centre - View Status - Details.

Or Right click on the icon - Network and Sharing Centre - View Status -
Details.

Where are you seeing this "View Status"? Not visible anywhere in my
Networking and Sharing Centre - Windows 7 Home Premium...

Nor mine. I clicked on Local Area Network and then Details button.
Do you know what period of time the Activity covers in that window? is it
the period of the lease, or something else?

My mistake, you click on the full name of the connection which is in
blue near the short connection name. I was looking at a Vista screen at
the time. :-/

To answer Gordon's second question, the amount of data shown at the
bottom of the status window when you click on the connection name is the
total amount since the last time you either rebooted or explicitly
opened the connection. If you tell the machine to suspend or hibernate,
the counter is not reset.

Thanks for that info!

In the search box, type cmd.exe, and run that (as an administrator if
you eventually use it to change settings instead of just view them).

In the black window that pops up, type:
ipconfig
... or..
ipconfig /all

Under Vista+ you see loads of lines for supposed "adapters" (most of
which won't be of much interest) but one of them will have all the info
you need.

If you create a text file called something like "network details.cmd"
and put the ipconfig command in there, followed by a line with the
command "pause" (no quotes needed), you can double-click it to get the
information you want.

I remember when a command-line console was such a big improvement over
punch-cards we thought we'd died and gone to heaven. Still a use for
them!

If you want to know more about the ipconfig command type:
ipconfig /?
.... in that black window (a "Command Window"). Or google it.

Apologies in advance if you knew most of this, but it's often better to
assume less prior knowledge.

Don't even bother with the native Win 7 version.
Go here and install "Network Activity Indicator".
http://www.itsamples.com/
Its functions a lot like XP and shows things that
became hidden in Win 7.
