Hi

This is really about a friends computer. I have not seen it yet but will do later this week so I am asking here so I may have some hints of what I should do.
She has windows 7 and she informs me that after her computer boots up she has lost all the icons on the desktop. I said try the start button but she now says she cannot see the start button but when she presses alt control de. she. can access the computer.
I have never used windows 7 and only Xp but not I use linux so am completly sure to help rectify the situation.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

regards

Welcome to the W7 Forums.

Sounds like a virus got on to the PC and was *maybe* removed but didn't complete the fix.
I suggest:

  1. Create a Windows Offline CD or DVD or USB and scan the computer. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline
  2. Ensure that the AV (Anti-Virus) software is up to date.
  3. Download and install Malwarebytes Free version:http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
  4. Have a look at this thread:https://www.w7forums.com/windows-7-blue-screen-t14896p2.html Look at the registry entries.

Hope this helps.

If the only issue was the Desktop icons, that can sometimes be fixed by rebuilding the icon cache but with other issues going on I tend to suspect a virus as a likely cause just as Shintaro does.

I would download TDSKiller and RKILL and Malwarebytes to a USB drive and have them ready to run on your friends computer.
