Joining win 7 homegroup

J

Justine Time

How on earth do you do it,.It's driving me mad now.I have done it before
but this time I must be doing something wrong.
I even followed a simple tutorial(s)
Main comp I click create a homegroup, I select the folders I want to
share. am asked to write down a password then click finish.

Now this is where it goes wrong.
I can't find anything what says join a homegroup only to create a
homegroup. so if I click that I go through the same procedure as above
and it gives me a password to write down. What I want I assume is a box
to write down the password I got from the main comp....... where is it .

Any help guys.

Here's a video;

At which point does your procedure go wrong?

Ok... In front of on main comp it says I have joined and there is a
password and it says.
Use this password to connect to other computers running windows 7 to the
homegroup
1 Click start and then click control panel.
2 Under network an Internet, click choose homegroup and sharing options
3 Click join now, and then follow the homegroup wizzard to enter the
password.

I do exactly that but I don't get a join "now" button. I only get
"create a homegroup". that's the only button to press. If I do it gives
me a password to put on the main comp. I seem to be going backword and
foreward. As it now the comp wants me to put a password into laptop. The
laptop wants me to put a password into comp. what I want is an empty
box on the laptop to enter the password given to me from the main comp.

On the laptop try leaving the homegroup.
Then a box should pop up asking if you want to join any existing homegroups.

Ok... The options after trying to leave.
1 Leave the homegroup
2 Don't leave and don't change anything
3 don't leave but change what I,m sharing

clicking 1 gives me You have successfully left the homegroup.
Then I get an option to create again (not join)
That will just give me (create) a password again.

I assume there should be a box somewhere pop up to put in the password I
have from the main comp'

It's easier to use a workgroup. Then go to each folder you want to share.

Right click > sharing > Advanced sharing > Permissions > add user name
"everyone" no quotes and check the three boxes.

No passwords needed

Before using a Workgroup, you have go to Control Panel > Network and
sharing and remove yourself from any home group.

If I had any hair it would be all over the floor by now. after spending
all day on and off, now sorted.
The problem was, after just having a new hard drive in the lappy I put
"steve" for the name of... showing as steve-pc (previously called steve
laptop)... the main comp is called steve (steve-pc)
Seems it won't work if they have the same name.

Thanks for all the help guys

That makes sense, at the bottom of windows explorer there is a network
folder that contains the names of computers on network, obviously you
couldn't have two with the same name.
I don't think I did anything when I got a new desktop except fix share and
permissions on my data partitions to synch files, (winmerge works well for
this).
