Is there a way to do this?

Is there a way to store text strings, like a password, so whenever I have to
enter it, I can just hit alt-x or ctrl-x "x" being a key of my choice? Either
within Windows or through a third party program? Thanks.

Google for "clipboard utilities" or similar; there are plenty out there
which will let you use multiple clipboards, which will I think do what
you want. (I've in the past used one called, IIRR, "Yankee Clipper".) If
it's in web pages, the Firefox add-on "Autofill Forms" will store common
things like name, street, zip, and so on, and fill them in for you -
there are other similar Firefox addons, and I think similar for IE.

AutoHotKey is the best by a country mile. Albeit a tad tricky to set up
for some things, there is little limit to what you can do with it. The
sort of thing you mention is, fortunately very easy to set up - here,
for example typing "tb" (no speechmarks) and then Enter, or a comma,
pastes in "Thunderbird". Typing "Lorem" here, puts in the whole of the
"Lorem ipsum" text test string - and so on. There's no limit, and they
will work in any program where there is text entry running under Windows
- Word, Notepad Outlook, Thunderbird, Firefox etc etc. I really would
not like to work without it now.

Sounds a lot like my Smart Type Assistant. Although STA also
autocorrects too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded that Auto Hot Key but for the life of
me, I couldn't figure out how to simply store a password. A lot of info there on
how to run a program with a hot key. Maybe I didn't find the right help files.
Just looks complicated to me.

Did you try Smart Type Assistant yet? I don't know how well it works
with 64 bit, but 32 bit it works great. It is so very easy to use.

version.

Thanks for that hint - after this thread, I finally decided to get one
of them, and that one seems to be excellent. And it is simple to use,
once you see how.

But the above page does say that the lite (free) version doesn't work on
7 (it's fine here on XP!).

JP:

I am happily running Short Keys Lite v. 2.3b (2.3.2.1) on a Windows 7 64
bit computer.

I have about a dozen shortcuts that I use almost daily.

I believe that I still have the actual installation exe software to
install it. Let me know if you need it. I'll watch for a reply.

Hope this helps.

Good to know.

I've set it up and put a few in (so far ±, ¼, ½, ¾, and …, since
this netbook doesn't have a numeric pad - I have other utilities [the
old charmap that's part of Windows, and Diacrit which is good] that do
this but SKL is much easier); I haven't used them yet (apart from that
they cut in when I typed the above line!), but will, as well as more.

Thanks. I don't think _I_'ll need it in the foreseeable future (still on
XP! [though I've just discovered that hints don't appear when "use
punctuation characters" is selected]), but I expect some here will want
it - assuming that the web page is correct that the current Lite
_doesn't_ run on 7, maybe it does. (It says it is 2.3, and the version I
have is indeed 2.3.2.1, but http://www.shortkeys.com/lite.htm does still
_say_ it won't run on 7. Maybe someone can try it and see.)
Hope this helps.
