Is 2823324 safe now?

Anthony Buckland

I note that update 2823324 was installed on my machine
in a recent mass update. Is it safe now, or do I need
to uninstall it again? Thanks.

There was a later kb to correct the problem.

You need to uninstall. As Ken1943 already stated: it was replaced with
another update (which you have probably installed at this moment).

How do I know if I've got it and what's the problem with it?

The replacement would have overridden anything 2823324 did. I guess you
could uninstall, but think of the millions that don't know what we do and
still have it.

Kaspersky has already patched their issue with the update. The
Brazilian banking software, probably wasn't fixed quite as fast,
but mainly affected Brazilian users.

If you haven't had problems up to now, it means you did not
have a complicating factor present. If you didn't have Kaspersky,
maybe you would not see a problem.

If you're not seeing a problem just let MS fix it.

M$ explicitly stated that the user needs to uninstall it, even if there
are no problems.

Thanks to all who responded. As to how I knew I had it,
I accept automatic updating and received a message,
unusual for me in that normally the updating happens
and I don't even realize it, offering a list of all the
updates. 2823324 was in the (long) list.

How is the user supposed to become aware of that?
Ask M$. I was made aware of the problem through the RSS-feed of
security.nl. They pointed to M$'s solution:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2839011/en-us>

It clearly states:

| We recommend that customers uninstall security update 2823324 and then
| install security update 2840149. This article provides multiple methods
| to uninstall the update.

I did have a Startup problem recently with "winload.exe missing or corrupt",
this seemed to fix itself after reboot and no problem since. Don't know if
this update had anything to do with it but have now uninstalled it anyway.

Presumably there is some technical reason preventing them from just
releasing a later update that does the uninstall (plus fixing whatever
the original was supposed to do anyway)?

configuration, it will be installed automatically, downloaded with a prompt to install, or prompt to download and install.

If not previously installed and now offered by WU during last update 'Tuesday' [May 13th] the version being offered is the fixed
version.

i.e. Install it

I suppose so. At first, I was under the impression that a second update
would uninstall 2823324, but I was wrong. Apparently, users have to
uninstall manually...

I never installed 2823324 because of the problems people were having.
However, I did install 2840149, the supposedly fixed update, and it
crashed my system. I uninstalled it to recover, so whatever they were
trying to do, will just go unprotected or whatever on my system.

2840149 never gave me problems, but then again, 2823324 didn't either.
But I always create an image of my C: drive /before/ installing Windows
Updates. In this case, I didn't need it.

When is the last time you did a full scan of your system for
malware, or for a rootkit ?

The last time someone had your symptoms, the actual cause
of the crash, was the presence of a rootkit.

And if you try the update again, and this time it works,
that can be because the author of the malware, pushed out
a patch to prevent the crash. There should only be a
window of a couple of days, before the malware designers
have "fixed things on their end".
