Well got Win 7 installed and dual booting okay with XP.
Installation went fairly smoothly. No crashes so far.

Cant get online as it wont see my modem (see other post in drivers) and although I wanted to install the 64bit version it would not let me, it would not boot from that disk and if I opened the install file from within XP it said i did not have the correct system for that install, or something to that effect.

However the 32bit version installed exactly in the way it should have, so first I need to get online and it seems as if I'm stuck with the 32bit version unless you guys can give me some ideas.

In 32bit all seems well, screen resolution is great, looks better then XP with th esame hardware. So until I can get online I'm just playing with settings to get a feel.

Good to hear you got Windows 7 installed, at least the 32-bit version.

Regarding the install of the 64-bit. Did you try setting your DVD drive as the "First Boot Device" in the motherboard's BIOS and saving that setting? If you do that then you can reboot with the Windows 7 X64 install disc in the drive and it should start the install. You may see a prompt that states: Press Any Key to boot from CD/DVD drive.

Try that and see how it goes.

Yes, had done that and it worked on the 32bit disk just not the 64bit one. If I loaded XP first and browsed the DVD then I got the install button for the WIN 7 but clicking on it gave the message about it not being able to be installed onto the system.
Would have been because I was in XP which is 32bit and doing it that way it thought it was an upgrade?

I haven't had problems dual booting between XP and Windows 7 (both 32 bit). As far as I know, if your computer will run 64 bit OS's, you should be able to dual boot between the two just fine. I would say that if you can run 64 bit, it probably comes down to something small.

But whenever I install 7 onto my old Dell that normally runs XP (and Win 2K, actually it's a tri boot), I haven't had problems. But when the startup screen appears, 7 is the first option, then "earlier version of Windows".

As far as your modem goes, as long as you have the install disc for it, you should be able to install it from within Windows 7. Or go to the manufacturer's site and download the driver, and put it on a flash drive. There may be more than one driver for your modem, a Win 2000/XP one, and a Vista one. The Vista one should work, if that's the case.

Dual booting is fine Cat. I just could not get it to install the 64bit version for some reason.
Tried the modem disc and it says wont work on this system. However I have a short term work around happening but I'll cover that in my other post.

Easiest install ever.

Hope I don't jinx myself by saying this but so far this Win 7 install has been the easiest of any I've ever done. Very few issues so far.

Even screen display seems better even though no hardware has been changed.

Apart from the modem issue I've so far not had to source a single device driver.
