Hi,

I have just installed 64-bit Windows 7 Professional and all the requisite updates on a new laptop. Some of my software will not let me install it because it requires Windows 7 SP1 in order to run. I opened Windows Update, found that SP1 was available and clicked to download it. The download went OK as did the installation to begin with but when it was near the end of the configuration process it failed and undid all the changes that it had made up til then.

I tried again, as instructed by Microsoft on the screen that followed but the same thing happened. I then downloaded the file to try and install it manually but that was unsuccessful too.

A friend suggested downloading the Windows 7 SP1 .iso file and using that to upgrade from Windows 7 to Wndows 7 SP1.

Lo and behold, that wouldn't work either. I got a snooty message saying that I could only upgrade if I was using Windows 7 SP1.

Can anyone tell me how to get this SP1 installed when Windows Update can't do it? I do not want to do a fresh install because I have, foolishly, added a lot of software to the machine and a fresh install would mean re-installing all that.

HELP!

I suggest you run the Windows Update Fix-it to make sure there are no issues with the update process.

Then make sure you have KB2454826, KB2534366, and KB2533552 installed. Be sure to install them one at a time. SOURCE

Reboot.

Try to update to SP1 now. Note you cannot use a W7 SP1 Installation disc. You need to either use Windows Update or the W7 SP1 Download. There are several files on the W7 SP1 Download page so if you use that method you must get the proper one for your computer - most likely windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe (64-bit) or windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe (32-bit).

Hi trainableMan,

Thanks for your message. I installed the three items, one at a time, as you said, and then rebooted.
Thhen I went to Windows Update and downloaded SP1, but it did exactly the same thing; it started configuring Windows but failed after 99%. I theen downloaded it from Microsoft Downloads to try and do it manually but the same thing happened.
As I was no further forward I re-formatted the hard drive and reinstalle Windows 7 using an SP1 disc that I downloaded. This went OK so after two and a half days of frustration I now have Windows 7 SP1 working.
Thanks for your help
