Well I tried everything I could think of, what was Googled and all of
your suggestions. I cannot figure out what is happening. So I went
and bought a new computer. Now I expect two days of reinstalling my
apps.
Fortunately my three data drives are good plus I have data backups on
the NAS so I do not think I have lost anything.
I need to move three HDDs and my Blu-Ray player into the new PC case.
BTW it is a Win 7 Pro, not Win 8 PC. Win 8 for tablets not PCs. Other
Win 8 problems so I am avoiding Win 8 until Win 9 comes out.
New PC is similar to what I had but this is a commercial unit with an
Intel MB.
Core i5, 2TB C:, 8G RAM. 3.4 GHz with USB2 & USB2, DVI HDMI and 5.1
sound, 500 W PS.
All good enough for my needs. I am not a gamer!

The case supports my needs plus has two empty external 3.5" bays. What
can I put in there? It already has a 5-in-1 slot (SD etc.).

Maybe some day, your SSD drives will fit in there.

For a person who is rich in storage devices like you are,
you want a larger computer case (mid-tower or larger), so
there is room for the drives. With the trend towards
smaller commodity computers, they just don't have the
room for a lot of storage.

It's good that you have USB3, as you can place
some of your drives in USB3 enclosures if need be.

They also make "dock" externals, where the drive sits open
to the elements. You can plug and unplug drives, without
needing a screwdriver or anything.

My case is sufficient.
Room for my Blu-Ray (already has a DVD reader/writer that came with it)
Has three open 5.25" internal slots for the three HDDs from my old PC.
Has two 3.5" external open slots for who knows what.
The case already has a 5-in-one slot for SD etc.
PS is 500W so it will do it all.
Has USB 3 ports for external drive it I ever need it. Right now I do
not.

I have a universal USB to any drive adapter: SATA, IDE, etc.
I use that to recover data from old HDDs.

not sure about SSD yet. I had an option to get a box with a SSD 160G
C: drive and 2T data drive but it only came with Win 8 Home. Seems a
stupid setup for such an expensive box.
The box I got has Win 7 Pro installed 9with disk) and a Win 8 disk that
allows replacement only (no dual boot). I may do that install later
when Win 8.1 (supposed to be free) is final and it is worth that double
upgrade.
