Hybrid Drive not working in my Toshiba Saetlite Laptop Running Win 7

Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" Hybrid Hard Drive

Just purchased a Seagate Hybrid drive on eBay and find that my Toshiba
laptop does not see/recognize the drive, (In the Bios or Win 7 itself)? The
drive is also not recognized when I try to use it as a USB drive in my Dell
Optiplex 990. Was wondering if there is some special setup to install Hybrid
Drives as this is my first. The seller is asking if I have formatted and
partitioned the hard drive before using it? If not, the computer won't
recognize your hard drive?

If the two computers I have tried to use this drive on don't recognize it ,
how would I format/partition the drive???

If its not seen in BIOS nor when placed in a USB interface I would suspect
the drive may be bad. I have a Seagate Hybrid and when put in the SATA bay
on both my Dell 6410 and my Lenovo T420 both saw it as a standard SATA drive
as they are designed.

Only other possibility is maybe your Toshiba is older and the BIOS doesn't
support a newer rev of SATA? A BIOS upgrade would\should take care of that
but you didn't mention the specific model of the laptop so no one will be
able to determine the vintage of the laptop in question.

But no, no amount of formatting would change if the BIOS would see the drive
or not when attached to the SATA interface.

Run console.msc (administrative tools), and see what that says.

OR, just send it to me, and I'll do it for you. :)

If it is not detectable at BIOS level, I would return it.

Your laptop should have a solid 5V source to run the drive from,
when it is placed in the 2.5" SATA drive tray. So for me right
now, that's your best test environment.

*******

Normally, I'd recommend testing inside a desktop system (good power source too),
but if you have an ultra small form factor 990, then it would be
a colossal pain to work inside it. The larger desktops, make
great test machines, as they give you room to work and easy access.

With my regular sized desktop, I leave the side off it
all the time (as a test machine), with SATA power and data
cables dangling outside the box. And that's my test interface.
Works great.

Yeah, return the drive. That machine is new enough to have zero issues with
any current SATA drives.

How do you stop it getting dusty?

That's a good question.

Being open all the time, it has no real defined airflow.

But doesn't seem to be all that dusty. Not a severe
dust problem. There's still a little dust here and there.

I can tell you, the CPU cooler plugs up pretty good with
dust. And works as a "filter", due to the fin spacing. I
have to clean that out every three months or so.
