How do I reduce picture file size?

B

bj

I want to reduce the file size for emailing but the built-in "send to" or
email option on the Explorer bar just wants to make the pictures into an
online album on Skydrive (which, strange as it may seem, not everyone has or
wants.)

How do I get the file size reduced so I can save the new file locally &
*attach* to email?

I think I fumbled my way through this once but can't figure it out again.
(This time I'll take notes.)
Thanks.

One way would be to install GIMP (yes, it would be overkill). You can
resize and save at a lower 'quality' (about 50% is generally fine) to
make a much smaller file.

Also IrfanView. It's smaller than GIMP and has numerous other
capabilities beyond resizing (way more than I ever figured out!).

When I use Windows Explorer to find and select the file(s) that I want
to use, (all in the same directory), Right Click on one of the files,
select Send To, then Mail Recipient, a Attach File selection box opens
up with 5 sizes to choose from. When I click on Attach, my email
program, Outlook, opens to a new message and the files are attached.

I don't think this would work with an online email program.

Looks live Skydrive can't be disabled when sending images by right
clicking and choosing: "send to - email recipient"

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-windows/8767d2be-8254-42c2-bb29-a230256609c8

The first part of the process on this win7 system when choosing send to
mail recipient is: choose size (of image) .. not that I will ever use
Skydrive

If you would like to NOT use Skydrive, you can always revert to a precious
version of WLM. You can get v. 14.0.8092.0805 from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=56883de5-2024-4631-806e-757693072a1c

Just one more reason for me not to upgrade to the latest version of WLM.

And what is more, IrfanView is a damn sight easier to use than GIMP.

Paint, in the Accessories group will do this for you.
You can open your photograph in Paint. Choose Resize (to a percentage of
original), and Save As.

LOL good catch (for you, not me). I would blame it on spell-check, but that
wouldn't be it, would it? And the bad part is I can't touch-type, so I can't
blame it on that either. Guess I'll have to just say I screwed up :)

And the double-post is one more reason I'd get rid of Charter if I could. .

You figured out what I was saying, without me actually saying it, so
you're doing ok. :)

Meanwhile, one could've just taken the typo as your review of WLM :)

For Char Jackson: I enjoyed your subtle & non-judgmental way of
pointing it out.

Thanks, Gene. My reason for not originally snipping a little more was
because I didn't want to be too obvious. It looks like it had the
desired effect.

I'm not using an online email program, I'm using WLM on my desktop.
The method you mention -- and I tried several times to see if I was missing
some checkbox or option or whatnot -- offers the size choices but then opens
up a mail message with the pictures in a online Skydrive album.

I sent one to myself as a test. I can see the picture in the message but if
I click on it, it opens up the online album where you can view or d/l the
picture. Not what I had in mind.
Not everyone wants to send even their most innocuous pictures via an online
d/l link; sometimes you just want to *send someone a picture*. (I may have
to revert to USPS if this sort of thing keeps on its current path)

Thank you all for your various suggestions.

I've heard of Gimp, but that was in the sewing supplies store. :)
Irfan sounds a bit more...friendly, anyway.

I may try the assorted "extra" s/w solutions, but try Paint first as it's
already "here".
I definitely don't want to make someone else use an online retrieval they
may or may not be able to actually get at.
I also don't want to "revert" to a previous version of WLM -- I have no
doubt that doing so will lead to some even worser problems later on.

I think someone else answered that WLM, at least the version you're
using is the problem. A link was posted to an earlier version that
doesn't use Skydrive. Maybe it's time for a different email program. :)

Hi BJ,

Try Google's Picasa: http://picasa.google.com

When you hit the eMail button at the bottom, it automatically
reduces the attachment size and opens your eMail client
in Compose mode with the reduced picture attached.

If you want to customize the reduction, go to
Tools,
Options
eMail (tab)
Output Options

Even works with gMail and Thunderbird.

It sounds like you're saying you think that if you use GIMP, IrfanView,
etc, that your friends need other software to view the pictures.

If that's what you're saying, forget it. All those programs do is let
you edit a picture and save it in any format you desire (among the
selections offered by the program you use).

So if you were going to send a large jpeg, these programs could let you
send a small jpeg. If your friends can read the original, they can read
the new one - and if they can't, they can't.

There have been some good posts. I regularly use IrfanView, but the
Image Resizer Powertoy is very handy...

http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/

Installs hook in the shell so you can just right-click on images and the
option to resize is in the dropdown.
