Help! Windows not working right after crash.

R

Roy

After Windows 7 froze up, I had to turn the power off. When I turned
it on again, it said that there were no disks in the computer! After a
few tries, it finally saw the hard disk and dvd drive, but:

The DVD drive won't read any discs. Windows just keeps telling
me to "put a disc in the drive". I've tried many discs, including CDs
I've played before, and nothing works. I've uninstalled the drive and
restarted the computer, it reinstalled the drive, but it still
doesn't work.

My printer (Samsung ML-2010) was first "offline", then, after
I unchecked "Use printer offline", I got "Printer error" when I tried
to print. I removed the printer in the control panel, but when I
restarted the computer, Windows 7 doesn't find it.

I can't do a repair install because the DVD drive doesn't
work!

Do a restore point to sometime before the problem.

If it can't boot from the Windows installation CD it's more likely to
me hardware, either the DVD or the motherboard. If it doesn't even try
to boot from the DVD check that boot from DVD is enabled in the BIOS.

Thanks, guys. The printer problem turned out to be the cable (Duh!),
but I don't understand: How could a crash kill the DVD drive? But
Ubuntu doesn't see it either!

BTW, System Restore has NEVER worked for me....

The crash itself wouldn't but the cause of the crash might have, it
could have been a power spike, or it could be the drive failed and
caused the crash. Is it visible in the BIOS? You need to look because
if it's disabled there or not visible nothing will see it. If it's a
SATA drive you could try it on another port.

There's another port? Wow, I love Usenet--you guys are so
knowledgeable, and such a quick response! Thanks again, Rodney.
I'll try that.

That last remark: do you run Norton AV or Internet Security? They interfere
with System Restore (or at least IS does).

The proper fix is to go to Norton's configuration and turn off the option
for Norton to protect itself.

My own de facto fix is to run System Restore, and when it fails, *then* go
to the settings and turn off self-protection.

Thanks, but the DVD burner problem might be solved. When I took it out, I
could hear something rattling around inside. I shook all kinds of chunks of
plastic out of it. I don't even remember a disc exploding! Maybe that's why
it couldn't read any discs I put in, though it has been in the past. Maybe a
chunk of plastic shifted and blocked the laser or whatever. I've ordered a
new one, anyway.

But actually, those pieces of plastic seem a little to thin and flexible to
have ever been a CD or DVD. (Though I remember now I did have something from
Netflix disintegrate in there, long ago. It worked after that, though.)
Could it be a part from the drive? When I took it apart, I didn't see
anything missing.

IF the drive works after all that, it's a fairly decent drive!

Never had 'em, never regretted it. I live alone, Bill. Just me and my
computer(s).
