Having to load games twice.

Here's a quirk I've run into in Windows 7. When I run a game such
as Diablo II, Doom 3, or American McGee's Alice, I often have to
load it twice. The first time I load it, it doesn't show up on my
monitor. The loader runs, and the little hourglass comes up to
show that the game is loading, but it never appears. I have to go
into Task Manager, shut down the game executable, and load it a
second time ... and then it comes on screen and plays normally.
Anyone know what is causing this?

I'd say the fact that these games were designed way before Win 7 was an itch
in Bates' pants. It looks like they're getting hung up while switching to
compatibility mode.

I read only one comment that I found in Google that might be
useful -- the poster suggested using Windows 2000 mode. I've been
using Windows98 or Windows XP modes for these games. I'm going to
give Windows 2000 mode a shot. Can't hurt, anyway.
