thats a little vague if your in the market for a gpu.
you said nvidia, but is that your only choice or are you looking at others too?

as for pricing, you just need to look at a few online retailers to get a fair idea of what price range you want to be looking at - while ebay offers some great deals here and there, the fishing and time involved take far longer than just getting a retail one.

google tells me 80AUD is about 45 GBP, and thats not much for a GPU im afraid.

Well, first of all you're not telling us what model cards you're talking about. There is a HUGE differential amongst various models of video cards from both Nvidia and ATI.

Your question is too generic for any valid answer.

I'm looking at around $195 for a new Radeon HD5750 at last quote if that helps to give you any ideas as to cost.

When I hear gaming and 256mb that doesn't compute to me. I would say 1GB or at least 512mb.

Here is a list I put together in May/June 2010 from approximate fastest to slowest with US dollars for the cards anywhere near what I would put in. The prices will likely have dropped slightly since then and there may be some newer entries near/at the top.

Notes: some cards overclock better than others and when overclocked can move up an entry or two compared to the non-overclocked competitor. Other issues to consider are whether the games you want to play need DirectX 11. The 48xx's run DirectX10 only.

AU$195, that's US$173. Unless your prices are significantly higher there that seems too much for a 5750, maybe a 5770 but not a 5750.

On eBay, type in HD5750 and search. Sort by price + shipping lowest first. Then select "completed listings" and see what the going price is. Here in the USA 5750s are going US$90-105

Ian or Clifford, when I added that list above it was a beautiful 4 column table and even showed that way in the window but was a long list when it actually posted. What did I do wrong?

I'm by no means a hardware expert, but one thing that I've found out about shopping on eBay is this. Place your desired item on your "watch list". Only during the final minute of bidding, make your bid. By bidding early, the price is forced upward.

And it's been known that some sellers has someone else submit a high bid, just to jack the price up. You can easily pay more on eBay than from a retailer such as Newegg. While I don't know if Newegg ships to the country you live in, perhaps there are similar suppliers there. Most modern countries have computer part suppliers, you may need to do some searching.

As far as the size goes, I have a 256MB video card installed, and wished it were at least a 512MB one. And I'm not even a gamer, but I do watch a lot of video clips on You Tube, as well as news clips.

I just think that you'll be more satisfied purchasing from a retailer than from a eBay seller. You'll get more video card for the money, and have piece of mind that you're not being screwed.

Yeah we do seem to pay more here. Excpet for HDD, they seem to be competitive.
Amazing how low the Voodoo Banshee rates now, I can remember when they were new and the thing to get.

I also used to be very pro ebay but gone off it lately, hate the hoops you have to jump through to get ebay or paypal to fix any issues.
I'm more for comfort and convienence of walking into a known store and getting what I want without the hassle, for sure though it will potentially cost more then a good ebay purchase.

I have used Bay Genie Sniping Software with great success on eBay. Track record is I win about 85% of my bids at very reasonable prices.

I'll have to give that a shot the next time that I purchase on eBay. Thanks.

I went ahead and looked on ebbay.com.au and if you look the 5750s that sold went for AU$93, AU$95, AU$112.50 and AU$188 ... I would say the $188 is somebody who didn't check going rates. The 5770s down under have a bigger range, going for AU$152.50 to AU$206

I use AuctionStealer.com - it places 3 bids for me per week free in the last 20seconds or for a fee you can bid at 3 seconds. No software needed - it's done online so even if my computer is down the bid is placed.

From the store I normally go. Up to date prices are Gigabyte radeon HD5770 $219 &
XFX Radeon HD 5770 $229. Gigabyte gives a 3 yr warranty and XFX 2yrs.

The forum software doesn't handle tables and will replace multiple spaces with a single space.

I have made post appear to have columns by placing a period or dash between each space and then making them white to blend in with the background.

The Gigabyte 7900GT comes with dual DVI-I ports. I don't know if all, but some, came with two adapters to convert those to vga and with an i/o box, and a game (see here). None of these items is in the listing, most importantly if you only have vga available you will need the DVI converter (here in the USA I can find them on eBay for $2.50 but I don't know about AU.) But yes that is a better card when new. Always ask if it was overclocked as this runs the cards hotter and wears them out faster.

The powercolor is not as good a card but it comes with 1 vga & 1 dvi native to the card.

Every time I buy impulsively on eBay I overpay. Like Cat said you can often find it cheaper at a store. If you want the 7900 then run a search for "buy 7900gt" or "buy gigabyte 7900gt" and see what prices you can find and if it comes with items you want or need, like the dvi to vga adapters.

I took 3 or 4 weeks before I bought my video card at the price I wanted to pay - and then when I got it it didn't have the game he advertised so I got another $20 off. I don't play games that often, I would just have used it to test my cards abilities so I preferred the savings anyway :)

First of all if one is going to buy something on eBay you had better know exactly what it goes for in the stores and at the etailer websites. Yes, a lot of eBay merchants do have higher prices because they can't buy in the volume the "big boys" do. But eBay pricing is not always higher than in the stores, I know this for a fact.

I have never, ever paid more for a product on eBay versus the store or etailer. I have always saved at least 15% or better. This is because I do my homework and research the product, plus I am not in a hellfire hurry to get it usually.

Discernment is the key to buying effectively and saving money when using eBay. Also a real good sniping program helps too. My bid is always placed in the last 4 seconds of the auction. Plus I didn't pay for the sniping software either.

Is this for new games? If it is, that 7900GT is too slow for 2009+ gaming above 1440x900 with settings set to high.

What baffles me about this whole thing is why go cheap on graphics cards that are four year old technology or so?

Spend a few bucks and get a Radeon HD 4850 or an nVidia equivalent.

You should be able to get an nVidia GE Force 8400GS for around $32-35 Aussie Dollars.

You should be able to get a Radeon 4550 for around $35-38 Aussie Dollars.

Really now, consider the fact on how much you spend on the CPU, RAM, PSU, motherboard, etc. Isn't it worth your while to get a least a fairly decent video card with around 512MB of onboard RAM?
