Going to System Restore W-7........

If a System Restore doesn't work, and W-7 still can't "detect" the external
modem, I'll see if HP wont make some arrangement to see we get a new PC that
works with dial-up. So far they've been a good company to deal with when
problems arise.

Maybe, but I'll bet they're sick of you.

I meant a System RECOVERY, not restore.

Question...when you refer to "system restore" are you referring to Windows
restore or the HP restore?
Just curious.

I meant a System RECOVERY, not restore. Yes, all the HP crapola will be
back. :(

Best to use Window System Restore to see which apps/updates you will be
restoring/deleting to.
System Restore didn't fix any of the problems on W-7. We already tried that
several times. The only troublesome MS updates were the ones from early
Oct. Before we get online with it after the Recovery, we'll shut off the MS
Updates temporarily until we see if W-7 can detect the external modem.
That's the most important issue we have with it right now.

As for the Vista PC, after the System Recovery all the updates came back
down including SP1 and 2. So far so good. I also downloaded MS Security
Essentials on Vista and removed Avast. I hope the MS software is as good as
Avast was.

Yes, I'm aware of that but System Recovery will remove any malware being
missed and updates that may have caused the problems with W-7. We're at the
end of our rope with W-7 and this is a last ditch effort to salvage the PC
before trying to work something out with HP. I don't think a reformatting
and reinstallation of the OS would make more of a difference than a System
Recovery. Something went wrong right from the start and perhaps the
Recovery will make a difference.

I have been using the MS security since shortly after it came out, and so
far it seems fine. I do a lot of surfing on open wiFi at school and at work,
and so far no problem. Of course I don't go to the site of the day claiming
to have compromising shots of the latest starlet, but other than that I
don't really even try to remain "safe".
I just figured the MS people would be less likely to put out an upgrade
for their own stuff that would not play well with their OS.
Now Wife OTOH who likes some of the online games has managed to get some
problems a couple times to the point I had to format the damn thing and
start over but with a good back up it's painless. So far with her Win-7
machine it has not happened and I know she is still playing some of the free
games.

Did you do the HP System Resovery?
Can your PC see the modem now?

I'm aware of that. I'll lose all my stuff and have to remove all the
aggravating HP crap again.
